Reloaders: Please help me identify what I have

Readers Digest Background: My dad's best friend gave him this stuff a few months back, and he doesn't really want anything to do with this stuff. He knows I am a pretty active shooter, and I have gotten into shooting clay targets recently and asked me if I want it. I said sure...bad news is there are no manuals or books or anything of the sort.

Will you guys give me an idea of what I have sitting in my garage? What I might need to get started? Not in the picture is a little gun safe with assorted powder and primers.

Just a little push in the right direction is all I am looking for guys. Thanks!

What you have is a good friend somewhere!!!! Lots of good stuff. Looks like a Dillon 550 and a couple of cal setups with measure. The orange thing is a Lyman powder measure. A case tumbler, MEC shotshell loader and an RCBS single stage press. You can get a video tape from Dillon on how to setup the 550. Get some good books on reloading and get started!!! You've got all the right stuff to do it.

I would love to find something on video to help me set up the big reloader. I am more visual of a learner anyway.

Could you recommend a good book or two on reloading?

That stuff is all crap. I'll trade you a brand new Lee kit for all of it.

Seriously, you just scored big! The one thing you are missing is someone to guide you and teach you how to use everything. Well, you should probably get some reloading manuals too. If you're up for visitors, post your location and I bet someone local is willing to come by and help you get started.

              +1

You can check out most of the stuff at http://www.dillonprecision.com/. You can also pick up the video "AC Gould" was talking about there.

Figure what you want to start reloading (pistol calibers are good to start off with) search the net for powder manufacturers cuz they usually have reloading info on the common calibers. Decide on powder (check on local gun shops for what's available) and you're pretty much good to go.

edit: Sorry, missed the part about whats in the safe. How old would you guess is the powders/primers?

Where are you located? I could help you get started if you aren't too far.

NRA pubs has a good text on reloading...a place to start.

Go to Dillon's web site. You can order the video from them...They used to have some of their manuals on line...if not, give them a call, I'm sure they will either give or sell you whatever you need. They are good folks. Value of your gift with all the stuff shown would approach $800+ to replace. You owe this guy!!!

I'll trade you a whole day of reloading lesson for one of those buckets of brass. Assuming they are .223s.

                    Are you kidding me?
photo one shows a blue media separator in bottom left corner

There's a dillon (blue=dillon) military crimp remover which is used after you size a once-fired .mil case.
case tumbler, you fill about 1/2 with crushed walnut (get at a pet store) and toss 3-6 handfulls of brass into it. Run as long as you like. A blue seperator is in the top photo for when it's done.

You'll need a manual for the MEC and the Dillon (650 I believe). The RCBS is fairly straightforward. You'll need a reloading manual (Speer, Sierra, Hornady or whatever) for recipes and instructions on how to set up dies and what order to do stuff in and such.

That vibratory cleaner is "HUGE"! Maybe change that to 10 - 12 handfuls. I've got one and you gotta fill it up to work right. If ther isn't enough cases to rub against each other then it takes forever to clean brass.

This is what is inside the safe.

I live in Bakersfield, California - and if anyone is local I would love to have some instruction. Meanwhile I will look on Dillon's website for some stuff too.

                              xrMike -

                              .223.

The majority (95%) of the brass is .223. In the lower drawer of the plastic drawers is about 60 boxes of .223 (20 in a box)
