I just got back from the range with a ton of brass that I collected from fellow shooters and noticed that the majority of Federal Brand cases have a dent on the side of the case about halfway between neck and head. I am assuming from extraction. Do you guys think these are safe to reload? I have been told by other seasoned reloaders that it wouldn't be a problem...just thought I would ask. I've loaded thousands of 223 rounds and never had a problem but have never come accross this many cases with dents. thanks in advance.

Most likely shot from an AR. The brass deflector will do that. It's no big deal.sigpicLord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home, let me die in an empty pile of brass.

not a problem at all. Most of the dents will come out once you deprime/size the brass.Originally posted by tankermanI think most folks bubba their AR's because they watch too many action movies, play too many video games and don't understand how to socialize properly, so they fantasize about being 'action hero's'. Kind of like little girls playing dress-up.Originally posted by Douglas711Is everybody stocking up on guys now? Just curious some gun prices seem to be getting high.Comment

I wouldn't think it will be a problem..
But take a pic of it for us to make sure..Comment

Common if shot from an AR. Size and shoot as normal. If the size die doesn't get the dent all the way out, when you fire it, it will.

From my experience with collecting AR brass across many barrel and gas system lengths, the case mouth is the part that gets dented the most.
The dents that occur between the neck and the head are commonly associated with an AK action so it was most likely out of a Saiga or other AK variant.
If the dent is severe enough to break the "skin" of the brass, I would throw it away, it is not safe to shoot. By breaking the skin, I mean if it would leave a fold even after being smoothed out.Comment

These are definately out of an AR. I was shooting with a couple buddies and there was an AR on every bench. Sorry, I should have clarified that. It seems the common answer is that the stuff is safe to use. I thought it would be, just wanted to make sure. I think I'll just toss the ones with deep dents and use the rest. Thanks guys.Comment
