    trying to reload 30 herrett

    hi there
just bought a 30 herret barreled TC that came with dies and already recut brass. the herret is cut down from 30-30 case. I bought some 308 barnes ttsx bt rounds in .308. the die that expands the case micros out at .308. I tried to seat the bullet on an unloaded case( no primer or powder) and the bullet crushes the neck. I think its called " turtle the neck" any way any advice? also I put the bullet seater all rhe way up . any suggestions?

    thanks

Did you deburr inside the neck? Use a deburring tool to slightly bevel inside the neck of the brass.

Did you expand the mouth slightly? Some dies can expand the neck to help the bullet slide in easily.

Does the bullet seating die also crimp the brass? Most likely it does and backing the bullet seater all the way up, causes the die to squeeze(?) the neck of the brass back after "belling" the mouth (see previous question). Thus causing the neck to be smaller than the bullet being seated resulting in crushing the neck of the brass. You should run the bullet seating plug down when you seat the bullet, then adjust the die so that it squeezes the neck down to the proper size and to hold the bullet.

The last question is most likely whats causing your problem but the others can also contribute.

My last question is, and don't get offended, do you know how to reload rifle ammo?

      Just my $0.02

Wow, I haven't heard about that caliber for a long time since Bob Milek passed away a while back. I think he loved that caliber for his single shot pistol.

Take a look at the 30HRT or the 30Herrett AR wildcats. Basically the same round except rimless so it can be used in a self-loader (as in an AR). It can be loaded hotter since it isn't used in a Thompson. Pushing a 125gr 30 cal. bullet ~2600fps ain't nothing to sneeze at.

Had to google the 30 Herret to find out that Bob Milek designed that round with Steve Herret. I miss reading Bobs articles on handgun hunting too.

If the seating die crimps it is probably screwed down too far. Actually no need to crimp at all. Back off the die some and adjust the seating stem to seat the bullet where you want.

Also Chamfer the inside of the case necks before seating any bullets.

Same thing happened to me on a set of 338win mag dies when I used them on the wrong press for seating the bullets. Readjusted them and all is well.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Sorry I haven't looked at this thread for a few days. I just started reloading and this was my first rifle try. Since I'm having to cut down the 30-30 brass I was making a dry run . Read all the internet stuff I could find. Trial and error. Iam trying many of the suggestions, and my second try work much better after I chamfered. Hard to find info on such an old cartridge but I bought a contender and it came with the dies. Thanks tho any info is quite helpful.

No offense taken. This is my first rifle ammo. So Iam learning by reading, u tube, and asking questions. This is why I'm so addicted to calguns.
                  Thanks again

Which reloading manuals do you have?

Newest Sierra and Lyman 49th. But they do not have the 30 Herett. I got loading data online and the newest Hodgon magazine

The Lyman should have a good section on how to setup your dies though.
Keep reading that over and over until it sinks in.

Look into getting a TC only reloading manual , it has better "coverage" of all the TC loads from mild to wild .
Bweise says "I have to say the situation was not at all helped by 22 yr old former Airsoft douches who kept touting here, "But possession is not illegal!" "
