30 Carbine Ammo failed the magnet test

So during a recent visit to my parents, my dad gave me a box of 30 Carbine reloads he bought at a gun show some decades back. It all looks clean, bright brass and FMJ copper bullets. I didnt think anything of it and took it to the range. To my surprise, when they put the magnet in the box, they all jumped. Now I am super paranoid about 30 carbine and my ability to bring it to indoor ranges.

Do most 30 carbine bullets have a steel core or steel mixed in the jacketing? When buying components, they never put the lead or steel percentages in the descriptions. How can I tell if something is good when I buy online?

I have never seen magnetic 30 carbine ammo myself. I don't believe it is very common, except maybe Russian.
The safest bet is to buy at a local gun shop or gun show and bring a refrigerator magnet with you to check.
If buying from an online source, call them and ask.

Almost all of the 30 carbine ammo I have ever had has been magnetic. The LC surplus is magnetic and I have some Miwall loads that also are magnetic. The Miwall is not a reload but built with new components. The brass is Remington and the bullets must have been surplus.

I didn't believe it, but I have some LC '71 ( in Lake City 50 round boxes) and it is definitely magnetic !

There are many new manufacture 30 carbine rounds that don't use a bimetal jacket. Remington and Prvi are two brands that don't attract a magnet and I believe Aguila doesn't as well. All of the surplus bullets will attract a magnet.
