Primer hang up...almost turned inside out...

I almost turned a LPP inside out in this 45ACP case. I think the primer may have had a burr on it. It did NOT detonate. I loaded 299 this morning with no problem. I did not even feel like it had hung up.

My setup is a RCBS Rock Chucker 4 with a Lee Ram Prime setup. It works well. At a casual pace I can prime about 100 shells in 15 minutes.

I do initially deburr all primer holes inside and out and uniform the primer hole size. You can see the picture above. I treat all my pistol brass like it is high quality rifle bench loads. Out of a 1000 pieces of once fired 45 acp brass I only discarded about 10 pieces that would not flare nice after being stepped on at the range.

I've done similar things on my T-7 with the slide bar priming system. It's one of the reasons that I hand prime now; there's so much leverage on the press that by the time I realize that something's not quite right, it's already too late.

I'll never go back to press priming on a single stage.

So I obviously do not reload yet. In an instance like this, how do you correct? Simply discard the cartridge or douse it in oil first, then deprime and do it again?

            Thanks.

It's surprisingly hard to kill a primer with anything short of a hammer, so the oil douse is whistling past the graveyard, sort of. Don eyes and ears, carefully (slowly, basically) deprime.

you put in in your gun as an empty case and pull the trigger and make the primer spent

I prime on my Rockchucker using the stock RCBS arm and primer feed tube setup. Not being ham fisted I can feel the primer seating just fine. Been doing it this way since the early 70s with no problems.

So did I, for a little longer than you, until I tried a hand primer.

Primer hang up...almost turned inside out...

I had another hang up in 45acp. This time it was NATO brass. I already swagged them and chamfered the primer pocket entrance. Don't know what was out of round. Looks like some of the LP primers have a burr on the leading edge. I had 2 pieces out of 2k pieces of brass and primers. I de-capped both and put them in a container to be tossed in our outdoor fireplace to dispose of. The 2 pieces of brass go to the scrap bucket for brass recycling.
