    Polishing Expander Balls?

Do you polish the expander balls on your bottle neck rifle dies?

I have gotten in the habit of giving those in new dies a going over with 400 and 1000 grit paper followed by Wenol polish before use (easiest done while chucked in the drill press). Was doing this today with a couple of new RCBS dies and managed to drop one of the rods, shearing off the decapping pin. Dang! Oh well, I use a universal decapping die to remove the primers before I get around to resizing, anyway, so the pin is redundant.

I do not. But if I had poor neck tension, I would not hesitate to do it.

I'll polish anything that isn't carbide. I find that it often helps a lot.

I dated a girl in college that polished mine. Worth dinner, a movie and a bouquet of flowers.

Ahh, to be young again. Wait did I cross post in the wrong thread?

I have not but that is not to say it is not worth the effort.

              I do.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

Nope. But then again I use Dillon dies and their balls are carbide.

I polish them, even if carbide. I use the 3000 grit green polishing compound with a dremel polishing cloth disc. Not only can you feel the die pull out easier, you also get less elongation of the neck albeit we are taking very small amounts.

I also put an o ring between the tightening nut and the die body to allow the expander ball rod to self center as it is near impossible to get the rod to be true in a die.

                      That one was good.
