The north korean satellite story is more interesting than a useless die to compress powder.
The compression ring they talk about in bullets is primarily from excessive neck tension and the seating stem not being a good match to the shape of the bullet.
Bullet seating force is usually more than the force it takes to compress powder.

Well, thanks Randall - I was just wondering about that and I appreciate yours and the others responses.

The link issue was an honest goof. But, yeah, that is interesting.

Some of the choices at that link don't make a lot of sense to me. If you need to compress the charge in a 45 ACP case, the fact that the bullet is hard to seat is, most likely, not the problem that you should be looking at.

I use those dies all the time - for black powder 45-70 and 45-90 loads.

Never in my life have I heard of using them to compress a smokeless powder load, seems to me thats just asking for trouble. If it needs to be compressed, the wrong powder was chosen for the load...

Black powder loads need to be compressed. smokeless, not so much. BP cartridges for rifles like the 45/90 etc. use these dies.

That's a waste of time. If you need to compress powder, you should use a funnel drop. You can pack it down the whole way. They look like this:

                        No compression required.

Uniquetek does, however, have a nice micrometer powder measure dial. I bought one and it works pretty good, though I have to keep reading the instructions to remember how to read a micrometer.

Black powder substitutes also come in little solid cylinder pellets, so "solid powders" is not actually far fetched.

Dang, liquid propellent would be cool, but so messy and your press would eventually become a bomb.

I was thinking the same thing. If someone manages a compressed load in .45 ACP, I don't want to be anywhere near them when they fire it.
