Differences between FMJ, TMJ, HP, JHP, SP, JSP, etc

    Hi,

I have read about different types of ammo and most websites/blogs talk about a couple of them and maybe list a pro and a con for them. Mostly sites compare FMJ vs HP, etc. I am interested in comparing all of these rounds:
    • FMJ (Full Metal Jacket)
    • TMJ (Total Metal Jacket)
    • HP (Hollow point)
    • JHP (Jacketed Hollow point)
    • SP (Soft point)
    • JSP (Jacketed Soft point)
    • SJSP (Sub jacketed soft point)
    • SJHP (Sub jacketed hollow point)

Whats a good use-case for each of these?

    Thanks.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

        Here's a few thoughts.

FMJ - General outdoor range target shooting. The less expensive Ammo is often FMJ.
TMJ - General indoor range target shooting. The complete encapsulation of the lead is thought to be safer from an air quality standpoint in indoor ranges.
HP and JHP - self defense ammo and hunting ammo is often hollow point. Spreads out on penetration. Generally more expensive to make, therefore more expensive to buy and shoot.
SP - The soft point is often lead, and is designed to start the expansion process on target impact. Seems like theses are more common in rifle ammo, and now days the soft part is often plastic as opposed to lead.

There are lots of reasons to select each, above are just a few.

SP is also very common in revolver calibers, particularly Magnum.

Thanks. Not sure whats the difference between HP and JHP though.

Also, wondering about the use-case for sub-jacketed ammo.

Freedom loads a HP that is jacketed even down into the hollow. Their XTP is sold as JHP as I recall, and it is jacketed on the sides but lead in the hollow. Seems like the terminology is not used consistently across bulllet manufacturers.

                Thanks.

                SJ stands for Semi-Jacketed. http://ammo.com/bullet-type/semi-jac...low-point-sjhp

TMJ bullets are plated with a thin layer of copper. The are used for cheap shooting, and are preferred for indoor shooting over cast lead because they aren't suppose to release lead particles into the air where a shooter can breath it in. The also keep the barrel cleaner than straight lead.
