Cowboy action 9mm?

Howdy,

I really enjoy shooting steel with .38 special. I pick them up from my local reloader, specs say...

148gr HBWC - 713 FPS

and

158g SWC - 740 FPS


I recently picked up a S&W 929 in 9mm and I'm looking for that same ".38spc experience", but I'm not finding it. The closest thing that my local reloader has is

147gr TMJ - 975 FPS

or

125 GR LRN - 950 FPS

I've shot both, but neither one is what I'm looking for, and I cant seem to locate lower FPS ammo on the interwebz. Plus the LRN leaded the bejeezus out of my barrel

I'm going to guess that low energy ammo is not available in 9mm b/c it will fail to cycle a semi-auto...? (But since I'm shooting a revolver I don't have that issue.) Is is possible to get <800fps 9mm plinking ammo?

I am not a reloader, and cannot start in the near future. Does anyone have any suggestions for factory and/or 'factory reloads' that might fit the bill?

Or perhaps someone could give me some 'conversation starters' with my local reloader.

I believe your correct about pressure levels of 9mm. Re-manufacturers need it to work in all guns, not just revolvers.

If you actually have a "local reloader" call and ask if they will make you a special run of low velocity ammo. They would likely require a large "minimum order" to do so because they would lose production of their standard product while making yours.

Never tried it. I just googled "reduced recoil 9mm"

Sometimes the right keyword gets you what you are looking for. Maybe "low power 9mm", or "low velocity 9mm" or "Low fps 9mm", something like that.

Convert your S&W 9mm 929 to .380acp or .32acp for recoil reduction.

These actually have a warning that they prolly won't cycle a semi-auto.

I get an FPS of ROUGHLY 900 fps, with that 115 grain boolit.

your 38 sp is 158 grains at 740 fps.

and puttin gin dummy values for gun weight and powder charge (equivalent), and looking at the recoil values...

You are looking at a 10% reduction in recoil velocity and impulse, and a 20% reduction in recoil energy.

So that round may not actually give you the 38 special feel, but even lower. Maybe a 22 mag feel.

I finally got to Load-X today and spoke to the owner about a ~750FPS 9mm load. He said we could probably go that low without stability problems. He said he would think about it, but had not been asked about it before, so there is clearly not a demand... I will send him an email and followup in 3 weeks.

Just got an email from my reloader, he has come up with a 115gr bullet @ 820 FPS. FPS not as low as I originally wanted, but I will happily shoot them.

THey will be available next week. I will hit the range and report back.

Sounds good. 820 is still nice and slow with a 115 gr bullet.

Some of the ammo referenced appears to be jacketed which wouldn't be allowed in a SASS (cowboy) competition. Just be aware of that limitation.
