Had 2 FTF tonight, WWB 9mm

Took my niece shooting for the first time tonight at TRAP and after going over handling a firearm, loading/unloading, dry firing etc it was time to load a round and fire, but I decided I should shoot a round first to make sure everything was working properly.

Loaded one round into the mag, pulled the trigger... nothing.

Could not get the slide open, dropped the mag, cranked on it over and over and could not get it open. Called the range masters and they couldnt get it either, took the gun in the back and were able to do get it cleared, brought it back and told me it was the ammo.

Well I set the ammo aside and opened up a box of Federal and shot that without issue.

I decided later to try the WWB again, out of now 19 rounds it happened again 1 time, however this time in a different gun, and I was able to clear it, but sent the round past the and didnt see where it landed.

Finished shooting and when I checked out the guys at the counter told me after clearing my initial jam with the round out of the chamber they heard a pop and found the primer out of the round. They also went in and grabbed the round I cleared and it has the indentation from the strike but the primer is not seated all the way in the round. Really thankful nothing happened while the employees were clearing the jam.

I just got back home and I still have the box and 31 rounds, including the one I cleared. I am filling out the claim form on Winchesters site and cannot figure out what number on the box is the lot number, anyone know?

The lot number is usually embossed, not printed, on the flap.

I have a 9mm case gauge. I'd like to see how the remaining cartridges measure up.
Where did you buy the WWB factory new ammunition? Was it at a retail store, gun show, friend, or did you purchase the ammunition from the range?

Can't really tell, but is that a high seated primer? Does the primer sit flush or below the case?

When you have high seated primers which sounds like what you are describing, with a DA/SA gun the first strike would likely seat the primer, and a subsequent second strike would likely set the primer off. You probably wouldn't get a second chance like this if you were using a pretensioned striker fired gun because the normal procedure would be the Tap-Rack-Assess which would have ejected the round.

In an attempt to answer your question without being there, I will make an educated guess. Which is better than a WAG. But still not a fully informed conclusion.

In you OP, your pistol locked up solid. When the range guys got it open, they found a "loose" primer in it. Possibly the primer came loose as the round was being stripped from the mag. Locking up the slide. Such has been known to happen.

In your second FTF with different pistol. Slide was tough to get open but doable. Add to that info, the pic of the offending round with protruding primer. Take note that the primer is protruding noticably "AFTER" the breech face slammed it into the chamber. It was likely protruding much more before that.

On the second FTF. It is possible that the protruding primer was holding tension on the breech face and at the same time not allowing the slide into complete battery. [FTF] Which would create pressure on the barrel lug. Making it much more resistant to opening.

Likely possibilities, not definitive conclusions. I'm quite sure you will now not take for granted that all factory ammo is perfect. You will be visually checking rounds before placing in mag.

I've in the past purchased new factory rifle ammo that didn't even have an extractor groove in the case. And another time that there was no "flash hole" in the case. That Murphy guy, he loves guns.
