    Bullets Question

I am New to Reloading I got all my set up ready. I'm in the process of buying the components needed to Reload .223 Rem. I have 3 Manuals. I want to follow the Lyman 49th. I will try to reload 55gr FMJ.
I will be using the IMR4898 powder, Remington 7 1/2 primers.
My question is on the Bullet, it specifies Sierra SPT 55gr. Do I need to use this specific Bullet or can I use any manufacturers 55gr bullet. Forgive me if this is a dumb question but I rather clear this out for me.

That will put you in the ballpark for any 55gr bullet.

I only worry about it with solid copper/mono-metal versus lead core of the same weight, or if there is some other issue with one bullet being a lot longer that the other and being seated much deeper.

        ^^^^WHAT THEY SAID^^^^

People start reloading for various reasons in relation to their shooting hobby. Then the reloading itself becomes a rewarding ancillary hobby.

There are shortcuts to reloading. Don't be tempted to take them. Because there are no SAFE SHORTCUTS in reloading.

Always start low and work up slow.

Welcome to your new hobby. Load safe, be happy.

O/P, others have answered your question, but in you post, you refer to using IMR 4898 powder. There is no IMR 4898 powder. I'm assuming you are going to use IMR 4198.

I only point this out to you, as a new reloader, you need to check and re-check
reloading data numbers and powder designations since mistakes can be made, some with bad results such as using Accurate 7 powder in place of Alliant Reloader 7 powder reloading data.

Good luck to you, reloading is a great hobby.

Since your starting with 223/556 are you aware of the brass with crimped primer pockets.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

              Thanks for the Help.
FLIGHT762 The powder that I'm going to be using is IMR4895 as specified by my Lyman 49th edition (4898) was a typing error. baih777 I have Remington brass they don't have any crimp as I know. I have gone over the steps over and over to clear any questions I may have. The last thing I may need is to take a class or have somebody's show me the process correctly, before I do it by my self.
              Thanks again everybody.

There's a perfect example of why I always instruct people to use two or more references when starting to develop a load. Typos happen in every publication.

To answer your questions, yes, in this case, you can safely substitute other 55g bullets because, the bullet make up and profiles will be very similar. If you need a reloading class, there is always the Reloading Club clinics, friends who you completely trust with your safety and NRA reloading classes. If you want a private class from a NRA certified reloading instructor, I'm available or, I can point you towards several other certified instructors a little closer to you.
