Moving on to pistol!!!

Ok, girlfriend got me a Dillion 550B! Now I can start doing my own handgun reloads. Im coming from doing rifle on a single stage, and will continue that. So now my goal is to make nice 9mm and .45 apc ammo. I would like to mimic winchester white box as close as I can, as its what works best for me. So my main question is what powder is best for this application. If I can share powders great, if not thats not a big deal. Im going to start with 9mm, and as funds permit move on to .45. i could use recomendations on a good powder to start with. Thanks guys.

For powder, I use W231. It's a nice basic powder that's readily available.

For primers, I use whatever is available at local gunshows.

For bullets, I use lead. It's just a lot cheaper (reloading @ $0.08 / 9mm and $0.10 / 45acp).

I'd use Berry Mfg or xtreme bullets, copper plated round nose, 115 or 124 grn...you can get the xtreme bullets at Turners, the berry's at local gun shows...primers would be either remington or CCI...Fowlers and most Turners have CCI's. The CCI's seat much better on my dillon in the 45 acp, 9mm both primers seat easily.

Powders...I use bullseye for both loads with great results...but I use a lighter charge than max loads to save wear and tear on me and my pistols. I usually shoot at least 120 rounds from of each caliber

I tried the plated SWC 45's from xtreme, they have to be seated awfully deep to work in my glock and ruger, so load them lighter if you use them...but I would stay with the round nose if possible due to feed issues...if you do use the SWC style make sure they are shorter than the winchester ammo.

I have some loads that give me similar groups (tested at up to 15 yds) to the white box ammo...

Make sure you guide the case into the powder funnel while loading 9mm. On my dillon there is sufficient wobble of the case to get misaligned and bent and torn in the flaring operation due to misalignment, but it you guide it up you will never lose the case and primer.

The 45 primers take a fair amount or pressure to seat too!

I am using RCBS carbide dies and so far not one issue.

The loads are:

45 acp - 4.5 to 4.6 grns or bullseye - 230 grn xtreme or berry round nose bullet copper plated, win #2 1/2 primer or cci 300 large pistol primer, OAL 1.260

45 acp - 4.3 grns bullseye - xtreme swc plated 200 grain, cci or win primers - 1.190 OAL MAX!

9mm - 4.4 grains bullseye, 115 grn round nose xtreme or Berrys plated bullets, OAL = 1.125 CCI or win primers small pistol

9mm - 4.3 to 4.4 grains bullseye, 124 rnd nose xtreme plated, OAL = 1.125 CCI or win primers (both small pistol)

Thanks for the data bubbapug1, I am having trouble finding plated for less than a fmj. So far I still need dies, shell plates and bullets/ powder. I bought CCI primers because I love them in rifle. My Hornady reloading manual dosent have many powders listed for pistol, so looks like I need a new manual. The other reason for the WWW clones is I need to make power factor for IDPA, I found a neet resource here, http://www.ccidpa.org/idpa-pf.html

For the 9mm I would almost prefer a FMJ, as its going through a stock GLOCK. For my .45acp I think lead round nose is in order. But I just like the way WWW shoots and works. Im also planning to invest in a case gauge, seems like good inshurance to use during competition.

unique and W231 have worked for me for both 9 and 45 either powder is good for a start, IMO.

IIRC, you use lead bullet loading data when using plated bullets.

The glock will eat almost anything, even the SWC's at the max length...My ruger P90's both had issues with the SWC's. Lead indoors is not the best choice for health reason. The plated 9mm bullets are $39.99 per 500 hundred or 8 cents a piece...at the show the Berry bullets are $69.00 per thousand, or 7 cents a piece. Bullet prices will be comng down in the months ahead as both lead and copper have fallen greatly in price the last two months.

Right, but some people don't know that you DON'T shoot lead bullets through a factory Glock barrel. I think it has to do with lead build-up in their polygonal rifling that can cause serious over-pressure in the barrel.

Powder seems scarce in my area, any word on alliant Power Pistol? I need to make IDPA power factor, and make the gun work with standard springs.

Conrats to you. I have found that 5.7 grains of Unique under a 230g fmj feels just like WWB. It is very accurate as well. My reloading guide says you can go to a max of 6 grains of Unique but I have only worked up to 5.9. That load makes huge fireballs and is not very pleasnt to shoot. I perfer 5.6 for target shooting.
