Pulled Bullets

Are there are good places to get pulled bullets? I am looking for .223 and .308. I found a few sites but from what I can tell they are not up and running anymore. I found some on gunbroker but I could go to Graf's.com and buy new bullets for the same or less.

Bullets pulled from loaded ammo.

Back before ammo prices started getting insane about 12 months ago, it was actually more lucrative to pull bullets off surplus ammo and sell the components (powder, bullets, brass) separately, like parting out a car. This is no longer the case since apparently, people who don't reload far out number the people who do, and those non-reloaders are willing to pay whatever dealers ask for ammo.

Another reason why pulled components are less often seen, is because this trend was most common in surplus .30-06 (M2 ball), and the supply of USGI M2 ball is nearly non-existent.

I don't think they were pulled by choice. Some surplus sold ammo is sold with the requirement to be disasssembled before being sold.

yep used to get it all the time the copper on the jackets weas alays dirty but an hour in the tumbler had it looking like new

used to get the 30 carbine pulled bullets all the time but since the dcm let loose with the carbines its all gone

For what it costs to reload, you can buy cheapo ammo for about the same per round cost. So why use 'pulled bullets' which are prone to dings, dents, and being out of round?

If you are going to the trouble to reload, you should do it with reasonable parts and the best powders, and you'll have better than average ammo. Using 'pulled bullets' only throws another unwanted variable into the equation.

Using that stuff makes no sense at all. Why give yourself a headache?

Personal reloads have a less cost per round than factory ammo. Especially now. You could argue it's not worth the time to reload, such as in the case of 7.62x39 or .30-06 where you could simply by Wolf at $2 per 20 or CMP ammo at 480 rounds for $100. But the cost of loaded ammo has gone up faster than components.

And pulled bullets work fine. I've shot pulled 30cal 152gr M2 bullets and they shot excellent, and with better accuracy than the Lake City M2 ammo they were pulled from. Reason? The handloading process resulted in a better quality control. Better brass prep and optimized powder charge.

I've shot pulled bullets from .223 to .50s and have been able to shoot sub moa with some of the .223s and .30s. Since I can tune the loads to my rifle, they will shoot better than cheap ammo any day!

Of course, we are only talking about pulled surplus bullets. I've also shot great groups with bullets that I've loaded and then pulled myself to change the loads of. I typically do this with my ammo that's left over from a match. That way, everything for the next match is loaded at the same time and under the same conditions.

I've been reloading for a few years and know the savings from reloading from buying new. I've also always loaded new bullets, and never tried pulled bullets because they have these marks on them from the puller. Do pulled bullets have to be swaged to make them more round for accuracy?

I picked up 6k of the 55 fmj-bt pulled bullets when they were $30/k about 2 years ago. They have a small vertical cut mark on them but they fly the same as regular new 55 fmj's to the distances I shoot them. I couldn't miss an 8" plate at 200 yards so long as my rifle zero was dead on. For blasting ammo, it's about the cheapest I could make.. I get the brass free, primers are 2.8 cents, bullets 3 cents, and powder 5.3 cents. That comes out to $111/k. Try finding any ammo for that price these days When Wolf was $120/k it didn't really pay, but now.. well..

When I run out of these then I'll likely buy a case of Montana gold in bulk.

Swaged? No. I do run my .510 pulled surplus bullets through a sizing die though. As far as pull marks on some small caliber bullets go, those marks won't affect the bullets flightpath half as much as a small knick in the base of the bullet. I wouldn't use pulled surplus bullets for matches but, for plinking and practice, they're fine.
