308 > 300 Savage?

Son just acquired a Rem 722 in 300 Savage. Looking into reloading some for him, but am finding the prices of brass, when available, to be quite spendy.

Read a bit about converting 7.62/308 to 300 Savage by simply trimming off some of the neck and re-sizing them in 300 Savage die. Anyone here ever done this? Did it work?

Bite the bullet, buy the brass. I think you will be glad you did. My FIL killed lots of deer with a 300 Savage.

I've got the same rifle. Very accurate and great on deer out to about 250 yards. Let me know when you find some brass and I'll share my pet load with you.

Not a biggy to make it from 30-06, doesn't mention 308 parent case but may be do-able. Check SAAMI spec sight for dimensional compatibility.

I was going to suggest purchasing a forming die, now I am thinking I should purchase a safe for my forming dies.

C&H 4D list a group A die for $52.00.

I would purchase a 308 W forming die and shorten it, most would find shortening a die difficult. I have an in-line, angle and butt grinder. The grinder is used to make pilots, gages and tapers.

It is a relatively easy chore -- but not as easy as buying brass -
Simplest way for me, resize in 308 die - Trim to length -
with a moderate load, seat bullet to engage rifling -- choot -
You now have a nice fire-formed case.
If you have a case gage you can muck about adjusting die, etc --
Cases are close to same shoulder and neck/shoulder dimensions but
the shoulder angles differ -- 20 degree and 30 degree -
Again a moderate load to fire-form..

50 new cases for $37.00. Again, I would purchases a forming die. The forming die will pay for itself. I have purchased new pull down cases from Pat's in Ohio. 300 Savages cases formed from surplus/new cases cost me .10 cents each plus time.

Thanks for replies. I've been reading and found the neck thickness may be an issue on trimmed / reformed 308 brass. I have no neck turning/thinning equipment and don't really ant to get that far into the weeds to save a few dimes, so I bought two boxes of Hornady 50 packs for close to $90, with tax.

You might want to consider running a .308 reamer into the chamber.
Clean it up and shoot. 308, or pick up a used .308 barrel ($50 new/used).

Yah. My 722 300 Savage did this and I figured it's ok for an oldie. That's what was nice about these. They're dammed accurate and not a CNC in sight. Persons whom bad mouth them are retards.
This quote came off 24hourcampfire forum and was accompanied by a picture of a target with 4 bullet holes that could be covered by a dime. Made me chuckle.
