270 Winchester recipe?

Just bought a Savage in 270 Winchester. 22" barrel with 1:10 twist. Anyone have a good target/plinking load? 300 yards max. I would like to stick with IMR4064 or H4350 since I already use those powders.

54gr of 4350 in my 270 worked good with 130 e-tip non lead bullets.

I use 45 gr of IMR 4064 with a 130 gr bullet.

I totally believe you're entitled to look/find all the velocity you want, but just out of curiosity, why the need for 3,000 fps?

Three thousand feet per second just seemed to be a magic number, a major threshold, any bullet going 3000 fps will fly so flat, cause so much damage, that it performs outside physical time, space, and reality.

All that stuff.


Glad we are still using English dimensions, converting 3000 fps to the Metric system just would not have the same panache.

Try H4831 or H4831sc, works very well in a 270 under a 130 grain bullet. I use an electric dispenser, so powder grain size isn't a problem. The powder is slower than IMR 4350. I like it in a few calibers...

My Win model 70 270 cal likes 55grn of IMR 4831, 130grn pro hunters.

My recipe is old tried and true 60 grains of 4831 and 130 accubond 3 dead deer didn't complain......

I use 51gn of imr 4451 under a 150gn accubond LR with a cci br-2 primer pretty spot on with a nickel size group at 100 yards in a model 70

3000 fps is pretty close to 'standard' 130 grain factory rounds. I second the 4831. That should give you close to 3000 fps.

Been hunting with 60 gr. of H 4831 with 130 gr. partition for years. Recently switched to H 4831 sc because it runs through powder measure better.
