    Reforming brass need intermediate step.

I'm in the process of reforming some brass.

Right now the "to" and "from" cartridge cases have about .278 difference at the base and when I try to reform directly I get a ridge about a quarter inch up from the cartridge base.

Any suggestions on an intermediate size to make this work?

    Here is the plan

    7.5 Swiss >> 30-06 >> .308 Win >> .300 Savage

It's a rather involved story about why I want/need to do this and i'd rather not get into the why's/wherefore's just now.

The place I'm hung up Atm is the first step... need something between .4976 and .4698 at the base that won't present a problem for any of the subsequent stages of the process.

Pics and maybe some of the rationale later.

ETA: Looking at this further I see 300 Savage as having a base of .471 so maybe there is a better path from 7.5 Swiss to 300 Savage. Any tips that suggest an alternate sequence are welcome.

I would go straight from 30/06 or 308W.

I control the price of cases by purchasing cases I plan to use for forming, with the exception of belted cases a formed case cost no more than eleven cents each plus the dies.

7.5 Swiss is NOT a good candidate for conversion to .300 Sav.

7.5 head dia is .480" with rim dia of .482".

300 Sav is .471" head dia and rim of .473".

Such a large base dia reduction would require a "push through" die. Which would result in the destruction of the extractor groove.

John Donnelly's Manual of Cartridge Conversions suggest. Starting with a same head dia case.

Example he gives is 30-06. which is a pretty straight forward change.

30-06....Anneal case neck. Run into 300 Sav FL die with expander removed. Trim to lenght. ID neck ream if necessary. Chamfer. Run into FL 300 die with expander in place.
Starting a conversion, it is always best to adhere to the KISS rule. Use a parent case with same base/rim dia.

The finished product is for an old 7.5 Swiss rifle that has been rechambered in 300 Savage, so the case rim should be a perfect fit.

Thanks for the print reference, I'll try to locate a copy.

I am "stuck" with 500 7.5 boxer brass that I have been trying to sell for months with no takers, so the next reasonable option is to make it useable. I agree with you that it's not an ideal situation, but I'm trying to do what I can with what I've got.

I tried going directly to 30-06. It didn't work because the base of the 7.5 is too big and makes a ridge... that's why I need an intermediate step. I'll post a pic to make it more clear. I'm not just going to throw away 500 basically new brass. Need to make them work somehow.

The problem I'm seeing is even though you can make a big base .300 Savage it doesn't mean it will chamber. The base of the chamber is what?

Well OK then, that is a horse of a different color. I thought you meant an actual in spec 300 Sav chamber. Likely the Guffster thought same.

What you have is a bubba hybrid bastard 300 Sav chamber. Which has a .306" bore. Which also explains why you are getting an approx. .005" step in the case. Bore dia should not create problems unless you choose to load HOT. I would load cast and keep pressure down.

You could possibly get away with using a modified .308 sizer shortened to allow it to neck size only your cases. Then fireform cases to chamber. And continue to neck size them only.

If you make a chamber casting and send it to Lee Precision. They will make you a die set for your Hybrid Chamber from their custom order shop. IIRC cost is in the $70/75 range.

Good luck and please keep us updated. You have a unique problem there. We can all possibly learn from the solution.

And please, do post some pics.

I don't have time to check but look up 30 Remington and the 30 T/C.

                  The 30 Rem's base is only .421". I don't know what the 30 T/C is.

The barrel was replaced and then chambered to 300 Savage? Now we are talking about matching the case head to the bolt?

Check to see if there is a 300 savage/7.5 Swiss reamer.

Is a .300 Savage chamber big enough in diameter to accommodate a 7.5 Swiss diameter casehead?

It honestly seems like it is way too much hassle than its worth over 500 pieces of brass. If they were 500 new cases of 50 BMG Lapua brass, it might be worth the endeavor.

If YOU think so then buy it and take it off my hands.

I'm not pitching it in the trash. Either it sells or it shoots.

If you can help with either of those I'm listening. If your commentary consists of "it can't be done" or "why bother" then that doesn't seem very helpful.

I cannot purchase your brass as I do not have the correct chambering and do not plan on making it. It is not something you need to throw away, just set it aside for now. By taking on such an endeavor, I think my suggestion is quite helpful advice. What you are doing will take a lot of time, and it might actually cost you more in the long run. This is especially the case if you end up requiring barrelling with a custom chamber, custom dies, etc.

I don't mean offense; that is simply friendly advice since you are looking to create a case that is fit for the most common boltface size in the world. Sources of brass that will fit the standard boltface are extremely immense.

                              To answer your question --
If i understand you question correctly - you want to size down the base a of a case --
You need a ring die and an arbor press or equal -- push the case all the way through the die -- watch for distortion of the primer pocket --
A good die lube is very helpful -- I don't know if it is still available but STP works ok, not the best though

Made quite a few 7.35 cases this way, even a few 7.62x39 when they were unheard of here --
Did i see a question about 30 rem? 30 remington brass is better made from 30/30
