The 7.62x51 max headspace length that they quote in that article is NOT the same dimension used for the 7.62x51 NATO spec or any other 7.62x51 spec or headspace gauges that I have ever encountered.

I don't know what the intention of this thread is, but when it comes to chambers, tight is right.

I agree; however, in combat, you also aren't picking up your brass. It's a non-issue since you will use the gun and ammo issued. The folks making the ammo and barrels should align it to what would work.

For just accuracy in reloading, it is my belief that many yield suboptimal results and they are over-sizing when they have a lose chamber.

The standard headspace for TRGs is 0.001". Because it is a bolt action, 0.001" is okay for clearance. All my rifles are built at 0.001" headspace. Having any more in a bolt action is slop and you'll end up oversizing unless you carefully set your dies and/or use custom dies.

Is there any other way to set up a die ? If I use a standard shell holder ( Redding ) and have my standard FL die ( Redding ) make hard contact with the shell holder . My case will be sized to 1.622 or .008 below my Forster GO gage .

My point is that one should always take great care in setting up there dies . Competition shell holders have been a god send for me . I only started using them about a year ago . Thanks to a debate here on calguns . Not sure why but at the time I had a completely different understanding as to how they worked .

I used to use feeler gages as shims under the case in the shell holder to get my cases sized perfect . Again not realizing how much press deflection I was really getting at times . I always knew there was some but after running some test . I found out I was getting as much as .006 of deflection on some of the more stubborn cases .

Sorry may have went OT there .

                    Pretty eye-opening huh?

                      Eye opening ?

Yes for sure . The interesting thing is and maybe the best part . The time I save sizing cases now . I would wax and size a case . Remove wax with rag so not to gum up my comparator and measure datum to head . If not what I was looking for I'd re-wax and size with .0015 shim . Clean off wax , measure if correct set aside if not repeat with larger shim . Now to be clear hear I was not using shims on every case . I had the die set pretty good but I still needed to shim maybe 10 or so out of every hundred .

The thing is I was measuring every single case I sized after sizing . Clean wax off and measure . Thousands of times over the years . Now using the comp shell holders I start by sizing a couple cases to be sure I have the right holder . Once that's confirmed I size 10 and measure each one to be sure they are consistent . If so I can just start cranking them out double checking one or two every so often . This gets me a +/- of .001 measurement and 80% of them are +/- .0005 .

Now that's no different then before . I was getting the same results before when shimming the case . It just took twice the time and effort to do so .
