    'Washing' tumbled brass

    I just started processing 1,000 cases, 9mm.
I tumbled about a third of the cases and they are now shiny but have a black residue from tumbling.

Is it ok to now rinse then dry them?

I have them in a plastic container. I was considering partially filling it with water then agitating. Then spreading them on something in the sun to dry (brass raisins).

This would keep my hands cleaner as I begin inspecting and sorting.

So again, is rinsing and thoroughly drying them ok?

    Black residue?

    U mean inside? Or outside?

What did you tumble them in?

The outside. The inside is debris-free so I'm fine with that.
Just would like to keep my fingertips a little cleaner when handling the brass in processing.
The media is whatever came with the Lyman Turbo Tumbler 1200 (it was included). I've previously tumbled about 4-500 rounds.

Tumble them for a couple hours in some clean (no additives) corncob or walnut. It shouldn't leave any residue but dust.

How often should I replace the media?
Tumbling while I'm at work would be impractical (but make for very shiny brass). I'm a truck driver and I'm gone Thursday thru Monday.

Tumble it in some untreated media like was suggested above. Then cut the Lyman media with some plain media. There's too much unicorn dust in there.

If your gone Thursday to Monday turn them on when you leave and shut them off when you get home.
I have let them tumble for 5 days when I forgot the machine was running and they turn out beautifully.
The black residue is the burned up powder from inside the cases.
Wear some gloves and your fingers won't turn black.
Relace the media when the walnut shell get very dull looking.
If you have an old window screen you can wash it then let it dry and use it a second time.

If I wash brass I use the citric acid "soup"...rinse well....let things really dry inside and out and then tumble with walnut and a small amount of Nufinish...I add a couple of cut up used dryer sheets to kill the dust...tumble for a couple of hours...the washing cleans all the crud from inside before you shine them up in the tumbler...make sure they are dry before tumbling or you will have gook.

A million listings for citric acid brass cleaner on the internet and citric acid is for sale on E bay in small amounts (like a pound or so)...it only takes a little each washing.

                        link on some for example:

Where does the unicorn dust come from? Where do unicorns live?
