Making your own jacketed .457-.458 bullets

For all you .45-70, .458 SOCOM guys out there who don't feel like spending a buck or so a round when loading your rifles we decided to show how we make our jacketed bullets. (likeded that run-on sentence aye grammar nazis?)

Of course we are using dies most people would have on hand or those which won't cost your first born to obtain.

Manny, I only watched about 15 minutes of the video but had a question: after you insert your cores, you mention running the slug through a 45 ACP sizing die.

The bullet diameter for the 45.70 is 0.458" and the diameter for the 45 ACP is 0.452". Are you having any issues with undersized bullets?

I haven't watched any of it so, I'm taking a WAG. Maybe he is using a standard .45acp case sizing die. It would create oversized bullets which would measure about .476" or so.

Is the cost diff between a 400 gr and 300 gr projectle that significant? If so, then the extra work might be worth it. IDK.

But if the goal or secondary goal is to push it at velocities higher than plain lead, I see an issue that presents itself with the final sizing step.

The cost is insignificant when making your own in terms of 300 or 400 grain, just need to find a mold that will throw a larger "slug".

I get these at around 1600 fps with no ill effects, which, for me anyway, is enough to stop anything in the western hemisphere.

^^^^ All good. was thinking of lead smearing at high velocities. 1600 fps is safe enough and plenty of energy

This is the kind of thing that tempts me to dash out and snag the 1895 I've been lusting for-just so I can try this.
