    Lead testing

Any way to test a pulled bullet for lead? I bought some ammo with a nice round green sticker that says "lead free bullet". Being as this is important nowdays, I emailed the manufacturer's customer service and their response was "that product is not lead free at this time".

Any way to test with common household chemicals?

Go to Home Depot in the paint department they have lead test kits.

rub it on the bullet and the swab will change colors if it detects lead. Costs around $5

heat it up to about 650 degrees.
If it flows and looks like mercury, it's probably lead.
The lead-free bullets are usually zinc/copper alloys and won't look as shiny as mercury.

Well, bought a test swab from Home Depot...bullet innards fail.

+1 on the manufacturer. I may have an opportunity to hunt pigs in the California lead free zone and the last thing I want or need to be hung high as an example to others.

There is no lead-free ammo for the .17HMR at this time. And I haven't heard anything about any being in the future. Maybe somebody took a sticker off something else and put it on that box of ammo as a joke or something.

Sent pix. Received a call from mfr and relayed the story over the phone. Sticker on the ammo was not supposed to happen. They are going to send me a check to cover ammo and lead test kit costs. Didn't request the return of the ammo either.

I think the handled it rather nicely.
