I came across these also in a box of really old stuff. Does anyone use this any more or is it just a collectable item?

the 41 shot ammo goes to the Remington brand derringers that some member put a link to images of.
And the side plate (the correct term for the metal plate that says Philadelphia and the word derringer both spelled incorrectly.) that you also have goes to a older type of "black powder style derringer" (the kind with a lead ball, cap and black powder.)
you'd have to do another Google search for that term to see your two items don't belong together.Comment

the Philadelphia derringer side plate you have belongs to one of these type of guns that don't take rimfire ammo.
They use cap and ball type ammo.

Actually, if original part, the spelling is fine. Henry Deringer with [1] R was the father of all Derringers. It was everybody else that spelled his name wrong when they knocked off his style. His name became synonymous with small concielable pocket pistols.
Lincoln was killed with a Deringer pistol.

sealocan, apologies if you thought I was "schooling" you. Not the case or my intent, I assure you.
My comments were for the benefit of the OP, who is a noob who has recently acquired a bunch of old reloading and ammo stuff he is researching.
OP, sealocan is positively correct that the sideplate is not from a cartridge Derringer. That those .41 rimfires could be used in. It is from a cap n ball Deringer. And may have some value to a person looking for original parts for one.

^^I agree both items could be of value to the right person they just don't belong together in the same gun.

Deringer Research "Philadel A"
I do believe the Deringer plate to be original based some digging on Google. Some interesting reading..Please see this link and the attached pics https://books.google.com/books?id=Ac...ctured&f=falseComment

Yes, Henry Deringer Jr. was instrumental in creating an entire genre of firearms. That to this day bear his name as a descriptive adjective.
Just as his father before him Henry Sr. was instrumental in creating the Kentucky Long Rifle. Even though they were actually made in Pennsylvania.
Firearms History is a vibrant part of this nations overall history.Comment
