Are all 62 grain 223 bullets steel core like xm855? Bought some Wold 62gr steel case and was going to take a class soon and didn't want to blow holes in their steel. Thanks

short answer is no.
put a magnet to the bullet. if it is magnetic, it is steel core and would not be advisable for popping steel at relative close distances. -
so only ss109 is steel core all other attempt to replicate the weight of the ss109
why did they pick 62 grain why not 60 or 65Comment

Good question. The military probably wanted certain energy, ballistic coefficient to achieve a particular performance at a given range equating to a 62 grain bullet for the 5.56 round.
Be advise that a 62 grain all lead core FMJ bullet will be shorter than M855/SS109 bullet.The wise man said just find your place

The 62gr bullet has what's called a "steel penetrator" inside it, not a core, it's a small steel cone close the tip of bullet.Comment

I used to get some 62gr bullets from Grafs that were FMJ lead core I reloaded tons of them shot nice too.NRA Endowment Life Member

If it has a steel case then you'll have to pull a bullet out before doing the magnet test.
Not all 62 grain FMJ bullets have steel core or penetrators. I bought a bunch of 62 grain lead core from Wideners many years ago and they are accurate compared to real M855 bullets.Last edited by JTROKS; 07-28-2015, 11:02 AM.The wise man said just find your place

It's not like the capabilities of the M855 is still a Military Secret.
If you charge group of shooters a couple hundred bucks a day for rifle training and skoot around the range facilities in a $75 thousand automobile, wouldn't you think someone could find quality steel targets?Comment
