Data Needed: 357mag, 800-X, 180gn LRNFP

Hey Guys and Gals,

I'm looking for a starting point for a load work up with the following components:

Hi-Skor 800-X
Winchester WSPM Primers
Missouri Bullet 180gn "Pugnose" RNFP Bullet

Steve's pages has a 180gn load for this powder, and an older IMR handloader's guide I have has data for 170gn and 200gn bullets, but Hogdon themselves replied to my inquiry that they have no load data for this combo.

Aside from the normal "start low, work up slow, check constantly for pressure signs, bring a squib stick", does anyone have any experience with this specific powder and an identical or similar bullet?

While I'm always open to suggestions for different powders, I'm not in a logistic or financial position to go propellant shopping right now, so anyone with experience specifically with this load using 800-X would be greatly appreciated.

I can't help you with 800x as it's not in quickload, but here is a Quickload "powder selection" pass with a 180gr cast bullet in the 357 magnum for you to see what other powders would make the most velocity at max pressures:

Cartridge          : .357 Magnum (SAAMI)
Bullet             : .358, 179, RCBS FN 357-180-SIL
Useable Case Capaci: 11.917 grain H2O = 0.774 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 1.590 inch = 40.39 mm
Barrel Length      : 5.0 inch = 127.0 mm

Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.
Matching Maximum Pressure: 35000 psi, or 241 MPa
or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 102 %

Looking at that, I really like Alliant Power Pistol or Vhit N350 or 3n37 as other good powder choices.
