    3031 or 4064 for .223

    I have a few pounds of each and want to load up some 223. They will be 55g hornady FMJ, which powder will be the best and meter the best. Any load data recomendations?

    Doing it the hard way with those powders.IMR4895,Varget,IMR 4320 would meter better.+/- .2-.3 on from RCBS powder measure.
    Keep it simple!

      I'd definitely go 3031

        I had a bunch of 4064 and my Lyman book said it would work fine, so I have been loading .223 and it works great. 55 and 69 gr. projectiles.
        I use the Varget for the precision stuff, but the 4064 works just fine.

          Neither will meter best, they're both bulky, extruded powders. Of the two, with a 55 gr. bullet, I'd go with the 3031.

            Thanks guys, I have 3 pounds of each free so I would like to use them. I will try the 3031 first. This isn't for precision loads, just to blast out of my AR for fun.

              I only use 3031 for .223. I spot check and it's always been very accurate through my Dillon.

                    FWIW, the Speer's Reloading Manual has both listed for 55 gr.
                    Code:
                                 Start Muzzle Velocity Max Muzzle Velocity
                    IMR 3031     24.0        2976 fps                26.0C *  3223 fps

                    IMR 4064     24.5        2843 fps                26.5     3143 fps

                    * C = Compressed Load

                      I've used IMR 4064 with .223 and a 55 gr bullet and had good luck with it. I've since switched to Benchmark just because it meters easier.

                        Use the 3031 because the next most common case that folks load for is the 308 Winchester, and 4064 is an EXCELLENT powder for 308 Winchester.
