Good primers

Hey guys, anyone have any good ideas on large pistol primers (for a .45) and rifle primers (for a .223). Also, where one could buy locally in Santa Clarita Valley. Would prefer to buy in person so I can avoid painful HAZMAT fee. Thanks

I dont reload pistol calibers yet, but for .223, if its going to be shot in a AR, Remington 7 1/2 BR primers are best from my testing. Just remember to stay away from Winchester small rifle primers if its going to be used in a AR.

Thanks for the tip, it is going to be shot out of an AR. Why stay away from winchester primers if shot from a AR?

For .45, I use Winchester Large Primers. They say they are rated Standard and Magnum.

For some reason, in a AR, the firing pin punches a hole in WSR primers. Stick to Remington 7 1/2 BR primers.

#41 from CCI military primers have a thicker primer shell/less sensitive, made for rifles like the AR because ARs dont have a retaining spring for the firing pin.

Thanks guys. Does anyone have a specific opinion about Remingto Large pistol primers for a .45? In case it is important, they would be used in a XD .45.

Go with Federal large pistol primers for your .45, just the best IMHO! But Winchesters are O.K. I use 'em both. Good Luck

For 45s, I don't think the primer brand matters much. They are all pretty reliable.

Go with the harder primers for 223. Several manufacturers make them.

Remignton BR primers are "benchrest" quality. Primo!

CCI for the handgun ammo works superbly.

I have never had a problem finding them, I wish I could say the same for Federal match primers!

All I use are WSR primers. As yet to have any problems after several thousand reloads.

THere is no difference in primers by manufacturer, only the shooters matter. A long time ago there were issues, but they have been resolved. You can get primers and poders at the Oak Tree gun club, Turners in reseda or pasadena.

I've fired thousands upon thousands of reloads through a few of my ARs with standard Winchester SR primers. Never had a problem. I'm running Wolf SR now without a hitch. Next will be Wolf SR mag. Have some 205's waiting too when the 5k Wolf are gone.

ETA: As for pistol primers, get whatever's cheapest.
