Cast .300 Blackout powder options

All right best and brightest minds of calguns. I drank the .300 Blackout cool-aid and want to cast my own pills.

I plan on using the Lee 230 grain mold, and using powder coated projectiles.

I would like the rounds to cycle in an AR pistol, 8.5 inch barrel. I currently have Unique, Herco, and H335. I would prefer to use Unique or Herco.

Thoughts? Or am I barking up the wrong tree and should buy a different powder?

you MIGHT be able to get away with herco for subsonics, but I would look into lilgun, h110, imr4227, w296 if I were you.

I have been doing more research since I created this thread, and it's not looking good.

I was really hoping Unique would work since the Lyman cast bullet guide has a unique recipe for almost every caliber.

Thanks Jeff, I was hoping to avoid an additional powder type.

Heavy cast AA1680 is king, good luck scrounging any though.
Search 300 whisper data the original 7.62x35
And also check castboolits.gunloads.com

I know AA1680, IMR4227, H110, W296 all work well with a jacketed pills
but know PC lead is the new wave.
Not so sure about cast. Maybe Li'l Gun or 2400?
I'm not loading 300BLK for AR's or sub loads.

Check out 5744 for cast subsonic . Works with most cast bullets for subsonic loads in rifles and good in some pistols.

It's not cast or jacketed, it's the bullet weight. There's a small difference between them, you can see that when you look in a reloading manual and there are a couple of tenths difference between the powder charge on each. 1680 is the one to get, but it's OOS just about every place you check. It was a nutjob powder to reload AK47 ammo; like anybody was doing that. It just took 20 years for a real use to come out. So instead of selling a ton a year, the market is 20+ tons and this being the gun industry, they have no clue about increasing production. So it's always OOS. I really wish I would have gotten interested in something that the vendors actually had a clue about what to do....

Ive used aa2230 for lee cast bullets. It cycles the AR action but its a bit dirty and compress load. Havent tested for accuracy on it though. Its more of a subsonic plinking round then anything.

I have had good results with H4198 for bullets 180-208. At least it is available, havent seen 1680 in over a year. Since 458 Socom uses alot of the same powders I have been wanting to try some reloder 7 in my 300 BO on the heavier bullets.

I second the 4198. I have seen it in stock and it's the only powder I've got to cycle cast 155/165 lee and NOE 247.

You can also start with 3-5 grains of pretty much any fast or medium pistol or shotgun powder, (unique, herco) with any bullet but it will not cycle the action. If you happen to want quiet ammo, this is the way to go.

1.0 grain trail boss and cast lee 165 gets you about 300-400 fps (a guess) and isn't much louder than popping a primer
