That's how they came in the rifle length barrels and the short .45/.410 barrels are a no-go in California.

Here's a crazy thought. See if they make a 357 magnum barrel. You can shoot 38 special out if it and with cast bullets and a small charge of bullseye you'll be subsonic. Brass, bullets, etc are more plentiful. And it'd be more versatile.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

And a 357 Max barrel will shoot 38 spl , 357 mag , and 357 Max ( super mag ) so why not go there ? Once you have a Contender frame you'll find it is the most versatile firearm you'll ever find .

357 barrels are ok but the OP was looking for 22 cf to down load.

And BigBronco , the rib also puts a sight plane closer to your line of sight . Ever shoot a Contender carbine or shotgun barrel ? If your not used to it can be hard to get what most people want in a "cheek weld".

For a 'bug out' 22cal barrel... 223/556 is the obvious choice. How much more readily available can 22Fireball, Hornet or whatever than 223/556?

you can load 3grs of Clays or Tightgroup with a 55gr FMJ at 1000fps safely, published. there is a bunch of data for cast bullets out there as well. I even shot 22 air rifle pallets out of 223 with just a primer and with 2grs of the same powder. quieter than 22short or 22CB long out of 18" bolt 22lr rifle.

if SHTF then oddball loads and even things like 16 gauge will be unicorn teeth

If the widely available 223/556 is off the list, what about that as a base cartridge... TCU

The TCU family is formed by necking up the .223 to the new diameter, and fire forming to reduce case taper and increase shoulder angle.

            6MM TCU using .243 bullets
.30 TCU using commonly found 308 bullets

Not if you reload , and if SHTF everyone is going to grab whatever is around while those reloading will have been prepared with what they need .

And I hope the OP has found what he was looking for , a 22 centerfire that can be down loaded to 22 rim fire ballistics for a TC Contender.

There are a few good choices list in this thread.

OP mentioned bug out rifle set up. Exotic rounds aren't ideal for that situation. I can't really see any advantage to a subsonic cf 22 that 22lr subsonic ammo wouldn't do. And if versatility is the goal then it doesn't get any more so than a 357 barrel.

I'm just thinking that in a bug out situation something like a 22 hornet isn't gonna pan out well.

And 26" overall. 221 Fireball is a fun round. I had a Remington XP100. It's not a subtle 22 round it was named Fireball for a reason. You might have ignition problems if you load it way down.

True but not near as bad as .223 sized cartridges.
