Loose dies was the problem? You didn't think the check this out as the first step?

I do! I stopped reloading for a while because I kinda lost interest in shooting early on in 2013 (and ammo was cheap). In 2014 I hit a snag with the lack of components but now that everything is available again I'll be reloading a lot more.

Nope! Trust me I feel plenty stupid about it.

It seems you don't own a dial caliper.

You should get one. I recommend a Starrett.

          Sucks to break down ammo.
At least you can recoup the components.
I got a few hundred rounds of 30-30 in a deal once and was busy for a while.
Whenever Ive had to breakdown my own reloads I take it as a lesson to whatever I messed up on.
          It was usually some shortcut.
I say was because now I triple check the heck out of the resizing die. Wierd how they can work themselves loose.

I have one and I measured the rounds but that did not help much in this case. The measurements fall within my Lyman manual.

I mean the more you work with your press the more you know what can go wrong. I never thought the dies could work itself loose the way it did so I never thought to check them. The good news out of all this is that I can make my reloads fit by taking out the decapping pin in my die and use size it a bit. Brian recommended that so I tried it out. I have 100 rounds salvaged so far which I will be testing them out this week.

So do you understand why this happened, other than the dies comming loose?

The dies coming loose is the only problem. I took it to Reload OC and Brian basically tightened everything up without adjusting how the dies are set. I guess with those progressive reloading presses if something is slightly off you are going to have problems. I will say that the real problem is me. My negligence is the root this problem.

Live and learn. You weren't the first and you won't be the last, unfortunately.

I've broken down my share of reloads too.

Not really negligence, but a lack of understanding why a change in die adjustment caused your rounds to fail the case gauge. You need to learn the basics of reloading. Go take a class.

How can you know for sure that you haven't changed how your dies are set? Who knows how much your dies rotated when the lock rings were loose.
