You might try 9.3 gr of Unique with a 200 gr LRNFP. I find that's a nice load. Not weak, but not excessive either.

I use 5.3 of Trail Boss under a 250gr MBC LRNFP

13 gr of AA#7 behind a 255 gr lswc. Gets about 970 fps and 12.5 ksi...

Favorite cowboy load is 5.5grs of Trail Boss behind a 200gr LRNFP. Really fun to shoot. Velocity is so low you'll swear you can watch the bullets fly to the target.

Amen..shoot a Missouri #4 cowboy projectile with this same loading..it's a soft bullet and shoots great...no leading in my Ruger Vaquero or my Pietta clone SAA...Gun and cases get dirty but that's to be expected and it all cleans up nicely.

Anyone load 4198 of any flavor? Seems like it would yield less than max pressure given cylinder OAL limitations, and simultaneously encourange use of heavy bullets.

Kind of like loading surplus 50bmg powder for cast in 308 rifles.

It's a great powder for calibers that used to be black powder. I hate having a tiny little dab of titegroup at the bottom of a 45 Colt or 38 Special case. With trail boss you can actually see what's going on. For my 1858 with a conversion cylinder I usually load 5.0gr with a 255gr cast bullet but I've chronoed up to 6.4gr and it's still a reasonable load. I just see no reason to push it.

The problem is that it's very difficult to find. I've been keeping my eyes out for it for a long time and I'm not convinced they've actually made any in the last year or two - concentrating on more conventional powders I guess.

Keep an eye out at Recobs...they just had Trail Boss in 1# and 5#...it was listed here under the "smokeless powder in stock thread" just a couple of days ago......it was not for sale for long but it was there long enough to get some....it's still around but scarce.

Thanks for the replies, I finally found some Trailboss. That is definitely my favorite powder for 45LC. Tried with some 250gr rnfp, was ok. Got some 200gr rnfp...much better!
Next I'm gonna try 38sp.

I have used Trail Boss, Titegroup, and IMR 4227. They all work fine. I like light to moderate loadings, and all three will fill that bill.
