    Questions about loading S&W .40

Am still new to hand loading. Started and continue to use SS press for .45 ACP. Am prepping to load S&W 40 for target/plinking in my Glock 22. Have new starline cases, CCI SPP's, and HP-38 powder. Using Xtreme plated 165 grain bullets. The Hornady manual has nothing in 165 grain. The Lyman manual highlights in bold letters that their info is only for fully supported chambers - not for use in unsupported (read:Glock)... The Hodgdon webpage for my powder/bullet weight indicates a COL of 1.125" with a starting load at 4.7 grains for a BERB (?) flat nose. Sound right to you guys?

Any other suggestions? I understand that as a high pressure round we have to be VERY careful to avoid Kabooms. I have Auto Comp and Power Pistol available as well.

    Thanks

BERB stands for Berry's Bullets flat nose, start at min and work up.

I don't have a glock, mine is an xd and I use 10% less than lowest load for a plated bullit and start there.

Thanks guys. Max is 5.4 and their starting is 4.7. I'll start there and see how we do. I don't want to assume so - stay AT their COL of 1.125" right? By the way on my range ammo's crimp is at 0.418/0.419". You guys agree on that also?

If 1.135 chambers and is reliable, use that. If you can go longer, go longer!

Its also not a high pressure round. 9mm is higher, sometimes considerably so. It just can be touchy. Running longer avoids overpressure.

I've been using 5.4 power pistol under a 165gr extreme rnfp. Light load, good for800 fps from a g27

Yeah I uses 1.125 and it works for my xd on everything I have ever loaded.
Crimp is as little as needed for solid feeding, it's a feel thing for me.
And if the book starting load is 4.7 for jacketed, I would start at 4.2 or 4.1 for plated.
Im sure they will all go bang, but I start 10% lower on lead just to make sure, and work up.
