    Bullet jump with xtreme

    So I am loading .38 with 125gr xtreme rnfp bullets on top of 3.2 gr of titegroup at 1.445 oal. I am belling only enough to not crush cases and strip copper from the bullets. I have tried no crimp, med, and heavy and I cannot for the life of me get the bullets to stay put. Shooting them out of an lcr. I cannot go any less on the belling without crushing cases. I'm stumped.

    Try light crimp. Have you measured a factory round and seen if it has the same issue, Maybe it is the gun.

      I have not tried factory rounds. I will have to. I tried light crimping with a 1/8 and a quarter turn past touching with the handle down on my press with a lfc die. Looks like I failed to say light also in orig. post.

        Make sure case neck I.D. is lube free before loading powder and seating bullet. You could try the Lee Factory Crimp Die, might get better results than with the roll crimp die. It will actually create a cannelure type groove in the bullet as it crimps. I use one to crimp non-cannelured plated .45 Colt with good results. Just don't crimp deep enough to crack the plating.

          I don't lube at all. Carbide dies. Then again the dies are new so I will clean and see. I have been trying different amounts of crimp with the lee die. Seems like the more I crimp the worse it gets. Last round is .005 out from where I set it. I did crimp a few to the point of grooving the plating but I thought that was a no no? It didn't cut through to lead but it left a decent ring.

            Wierd thing is that they have cannelure and even with the light load they still pull. I keep thinking neck tension but have ruined a handful of bullets by peeling plating while seating.

              That's a pretty light load for Titegroup...I'm loading 4.3gr with the 125rg RNFP Xtreme. I've found that going 1/8 or 1/4 turn after touching really wasn't getting the job done.

              My goal is for the rounds to slide smoothly into the chamber when released from a speedloader. I'm seating to the cannelure and increasing the roll crimp until it is smooth when I run a finger over their joint.

              I pulled a bullet over the weekend, for another reason, and that amount of crimp wasn't breaking through the plating.

              To maintain neck tension, what I've gone to is a Lyman "M" Expander. It flare in such a way as to create a seat, with parallel sides, at the neck of the case. It is for loading lead bullets, but works really well with plated also

                I started at min load which is 3.2gn according to hodgdon for lead 125gn. I wanted to load them at min to get a feel for how much crimp was going to be needed before moving up. That's when I realized that it was all wrong. I went from 1/8th to 1/4 to so much that I could see it grooving the bullet pretty deep. All of them slipped after 4rnds. I would normally blame the bell for everything but less won't seat.

                  Have reloaded a lot of pistol rounds but very little revolver and I cannot figure this darn thing out.

                    You may have got a batch of undersized bullets. You should not be getting bullet jump on a 38 spc load. I would try more flare, and then a light crimp. 005 is nothing to worry about at all, its really insignificant. I worked on 45acp one time trying to minimize setback. I got it perfect after a few hours messing with the seating/flaring/crimp. I finally checked a few factory rounds and I was doing way better than the factory stuff and then starting googling and found out that it was a pretty common ocurance which is why they advice law enforcement to rotate their ammo through their magazines to prevent the same bullet being chambered over and over which may cause excessive setback over time.

                    On a side note, an awesome bullet is Bear creek 148gr HBWC. Seat them flush with the case, 2.0 gr of Titegroup with a magnum primer and watch one beutiful little hole. It was amazing what that light load would group at. I shot them out of a 686 4 inch

                      I thought they might have been undersized too but they measure .357 consistently. I can't push the bullet in with my fingers and the bullet up against the side of the bench. But they still pull. I will try more bell and some crimping also then.

                        I read through the thread a few times to try to figure this out. So you load a round, the bullet cannot be pushed in with your fingers after you crimp, correct?
                        But the problem is that after you crimp and with the more crimp you add the bullet comes out of the crimp die slightly further out from where it was after you seated it?
                        If so, my guess is maybe your lee factory crimp (which is a taper crimp, which gets slightly "narrower" as you go up the die) is slightly snagging the bullet and tugging it out slightly as you lower the ram??

                        Maybe dirty die. Maybe less crimp is needed. Maybe defective die.

                        I could be completely misunderstanding the problem, but after reading the thread, that is what I came up with.

                          Haven't cleaned the dies yet. Will tomorrow. You are correct that after loading even with no crimp I cannot cause setback of bullet in case by pressing the bullet against my bench with my hands. The problem I have is when I fire four of five rounds and measure the fifth, the gun acts as a kinetic puller. Coal increases. Nothing to do with my crimp die, it's not pulling the bullet.

                            Ooooh, I get it completely now.

                            Seeing as you have an LCR, which is a lightweight revolver, bullets pulling forward is not uncommon. Google it

                              Hmmm. I can understand that. I can't believe such a light load is causing it. I would hate to see what happens with a full power load. Is there any way to stop or slow it down short of what I am already trying?
