Paging someone with QuickLOAD: mind running some numbers for me?

My copy is on the way from Deutschland via NECO, but in the mean time...

I have three guns I want to run some numbers for. They are:

    M1 Garand 3006 - 24" barrel, 1:10
    175gr TMKs (BC = .545)
    IMR4064
My goal is a muzzle velocity of 2600fps

    M1A National Match 308 - 22" barrel, 1:11
    175gr TMKs (BC = .545)
    IMR4064
My goal is a muzzle velocity of 2600fps

    AR15 Service Rifle 223 - 20" barrel, 1:7.7
    80gr Berger VLDs (BC = .445)
    IMR4064 or IMR4320
My goal is a muzzle velocity of 2750fps

    Thanks in advance!

And how exactly did you guess BigJ's chamber size and case capacity? QL's default does not accurately reflect the real world. Commercial cases have more capacity than military cases and can take more piwder and give higher velocities as a result. You have to account for all these variables before crunching numbers.

J-cat, not having used QL myself yet and being relatively new to reloading... how do I figure out case capacity? Fill with powder and measure? Fill with water and measure? Both? Neither?

And OLs was something I figured I'd play with when my copy of the software arrives. Noon's numbers are good enough to get me a rough idea.

          Thanks.

You have to take a case fired out of your rifle, weigh it, fill it with water making sure you don't have any air bubbles trapped inside and weigh it again. QL's default is inaccurate because there are too many different cases out there. Some cases are heavier and have less capacity. Tight chamber, heavy case, less velocity potential.

And barrels also vary in performance. Two different barrels with the same chamber can have velocities 100 FPS apart.

I suggest you talk to people who actually load for the rifles you have to get a real world prediction, then TUNE your loads using QL.

Just to be clear, take a case from my rifle and fill it before or after resizing (on these semis I bump the neck back 0.003")? Logically I would think after but I'd like to be sure.

On your other points, they're well taken and understood. Thanks again.

Before resizing. You want an expanded case to give you an accurate volumetric description of your chamber. QL depends on the total volume of your rifle's chamber and barrel.

                  Ok gotcha. Makes sense.

If you notice I left it at its default settings. I cannot read minds, I did what he asked with the information I had at hand. Dont know why you got your panties in such a wad but whatever dude. The data I gave him reflects what he asked for, if he is not also comparing those estimated loads to established load data, well you know the saying about leading a horse to water.....

"If" IMR4895or Varget was used,my experience has been that to get 2600fps with the 175,42-43gr of powder is used for 308win,and 46-47gr for 30-06
                      in the M1.
For the Ar to get 2800fps I load 24.5gr of Varget with the hornady 75gr bthp, and the same load with 80gr amax or berger vld at a slightly lower velocity.
Recent testing with IMR4895 in .223 yielded velocity nearly identical with my same load of varget and 75gr bthp.
OP...are you getting ready for the CA service rifle championship the 1st weekend of April at Coalinga?
I have friends that load IMR4320 at 22.5gr to start, velocity unknown.I plan to test with a 1lb that I have ,but have not found the time.

                        Thanks for the info '790.

No this is for the 1000 yard clinic coming up the weekend after, in Folsom. We wont be making State this year unfortunately, but hope to make Regionals in Oct.

                        Thanks again.

The only way to get accurate guesstimates from Quickload is to have a chronograph and change the burn rate in Quickload so velocities match your chronograph. Plus the case capacity and other adjustments and it still doesn't compensate throat types and bore diameter.

Bottom line, why do you think reloading data varies so much between manuals or why your are told to reduce your load anytime you change any component.

Now look at the Sierra and Hornady manuals for service rifle loads and see the difference from what Quickload spit out.
