You'll know its brand new if the insides are nice and shiny.

Once fired is better than twice fired.

Some brass has a lifespan. So, it can only be used so many times before it should be scrapped. Some brass, like .45acp, 9mm, .40S&W, etc. can be used countless times. So, sometimes it matters and sometimes, it really doesn't.

Or if for a bolt action rifle - it gets fire formed to your chamber. then only needs neck sizing if only used in "that" rifle.

Answers: #1 You know if you have them if you fire Factory ammo then save the cases(once fired). Also cases like certain Mil. calibers have crimped in primers (ring type indent around the edge of the primer), you can be pretty sure it is once fired.

#2 Once fired brass is as close to new as a reloader can get without buying
it that way. Cherished by the serious reloader for its semi-virginity.

Thank you. This is what I was looking for.
I guess it's time to reload 8000 once fired brass.

It's also a good idea to keep a count on how many times you fire the brass. Make a few boxes labeled once ,twice, 3 times, etc. That way when you notice bad brass (pressure signs) you know when to stop using that lot. Not as necessary for handgun as for rifle brass as pressures are generally lower in a pistol. But it is still good to know how many times it has been resized and fired.

It depends on the brand, condition and caliber. Anywhere from $0.02 (or less)/round to $3.00 (or more)/round for some exotic calibers.

                      +1 That's good advice!

That's what I do. Lots of Glad plastic bins with labels by caliber and by how many times fired for rifle brass. With pistol brass, it just goes in the tumbler, then in a bin by caliber, after checking for flaws that would get it trashed.

If I pick up rifle brass at the range that is unknown as to the number of times it's been fired, if it passes the visual test, it gets sorted as "plinking brass" by caliber.

                          Brass

Our range ( South Bay Rod and gun club ) here in San Diego sells it to members ( .223 ) for $25 a thousand. With the Giraud trimmer working it takes me about 3 days to process it. After awhile you just get board working with it
The .223 they get is all military. They keep all the brass the Navy and coasties shoot
