    Fastest wireless router?

Hi folks got an upgraded service with time Warner cable. I think they are putting in fiber in my neighborhood. Hooked an Ethernet cable to my laptop and was pegging out at 200 Mbps down but my wireless is bottlenecking me at 20. I know I will have to go with a new 802.11ac router. Just wondering what you guys are using. Thanks!

I use an ASUS AC68U and it pulls its weight with a 250 down connection here. The built in QOS is good enough for multiple people to do whatever it is they want to do without affecting other people on the network. I can still stay connected to the wifi on the other side of the street and pull down 100+ mbps. Lots of firmware such as Tomato by Shibby, so you can tweak it to exactly how you want it. Keep in mind, your laptops and phones all have different network interfaces, some faster than others.

The AC routers are super fast, but you need compatible devices and those are not yet that common. When faced with a similar situation last year and a few devices that were a year or two old, the solution for me was a dual band 5g and 2g router. For devices that would run 5 g band the speed was amazing, and the router was under a quarter of what the AC routers cost.

Hmmmm I got a 1.5 year hold ASUS g55v. So just find out what kind of wireless adaptor I rocking in the laptop cuz that may be my bottleneck rather than the router?

I like Asus too, I recently upgraded my router but decided to skip AC for now because none of my computers/phones etc use it so it was just throwing money away. I got the RT-N66U and could not be happier. Their UI is very nice and everything is logical to setup. I am getting the same speeds wireless as I get wired, typically about 50Mbps. Signal strength is good even through 3 walls to my bedroom I have roughly 50% signal.

Man, that newish d link tri band ac wireless router looks pretty neat except that it's $299 and absolutely massive in size. Seriously looks as big as an xbox.

I paid 150 iirc for a netgear n900 wireless n router at the end of 2012. It's been alright except the memory went bad shortly after and I have to manually flash the firmware every time it loses power or I reboot the stupid thing.

Asus routers have looked promising, maybe I should give them a shot next.

They have been saying that this one is pretty nice...
Buy Linksys WRT1900AC Wireless AC Dual Band Router AC1900, Open Source ready, eSATA/ USB 3.0 Ports with fast shipping and top-rated customer service. Once you know, you Newegg!

1.2 GHz dual-core ARM, eSATA, USB.
I don't have one, but these look pretty good. It doesn't say it supports Linux, or Android ( ), and the last Cisco/Linksys router I setup required a Windows box to have software installed for setup, so I hope that is not the case on these.

The 64bit Actiontecs 802.11N FiOS drops are pretty fast.

                  tag for follow up.

I have a Cisco/Linksys EA 6500. Its been pretty great except for the last 3-4 months. I have had
5 apple TV's connected and all streaming Media via Wifi at once and it has been great. in the interest of full transparency though there have been some annoying issues.

I prefer to register and restrict to my Mac Address list and the Cisco won't keep the list up to date and won't issue IP addresses correctly. I spent a month registering every mac address for every device and issued an IP addressing plan and it does whatever the hell it wants when issue IP addresses. and there have been no firmware updates since the day I bought it so its not an out of date firmware issue.

I am looking to change and want something reliable. I am not concerned about a single device speed I am concerned about all the devices and the total throughput and performance of the router at 8PM at night when everyone is watching TV, doing computer work and on their iPhones and there is 40-50 devices connected.

I will follow this for more input. Great thread and question OP. and I wouldn't recommend Cisco Linksys at this point since I've been using it for three years and requires more intervention than it should.

So if your not on fiber what are you on and what router do you use. Response is worthless without details. Copper Ethernet, coaxial ??? What is it. Who is the provider and how do you maximize the speed to the end devices over wireless.

No such thing fastest, only good signal strength.

Get a Asus rt 66 router with DDWRT installed on it.

If you're doing streaming/file sharing within the LAN, then AC connections will really shine. If your devices and wireless router supports 5Ghz N, switch over to that and see if that will help first.

Another vote for Asus. AC66R running Merlin firmware is fast and reliable.

^^ I bought this router at the recommendation of a friend and damn it has it been amazing. I havent done anything other than a basic install but speeds look better , streaming is smoother and there is improved range in the house. Totally worth money!
