Will the Internet ever be secure?

So the bad guys hacked the twitter feed of Central Command. Is Internet 2.0 or 3.0 ever going to provide security?

From what I see all online is a mess, from your bank account to the power grid.

    Any hope for security?

Ignore the fact it was the account for CENTCOM.

They hacked a *twitter* account. Two-factor auth would have prevented this, unless Twitter's two-factor is broken.

No, hacker tech moves at the speed of the interwebz, security is a reactive process. The hackers find the holes in the systems faster than the security experts can fix them.

It really depends on what you mean by "secure." By most peoples' definition (only my eyes), no it will never be secure. Computer nerds are very creative people and that is all that is required to crack a backdoor.

If you want to learn more about what they do, try HackThisSite.org

It is a great training tool if you are interested in cracking (not hacking), which is similar to the process of debugging. People search for ways around security systems in an effort to patch them before other people (hackers) can exploit them.

Very fun and makes you feel like a huge nerd (in a good way). Your friends will be so impressed. You will be like that guy in every heist movie that says, "I just need a minute to hack into the mainframe."
God may have made men, but Samuel Colt made them equal.

Send me pics of your: Colt Detective Special, AMT Hardballer, pre-64 Winchester Model 70. I'm looking for them.

The twitter account might not have had the best security. It most likely is a shared account and each user probably stored the password somewhere aside from the brain.

Mainstream news is never clear about whether a "hack" was a real hack or a stolen password. Nobody probably knows for sure but calling it a "hack" is more sensational, a la "assault rifle". I'm not sure if the security industry considers a stolen password a "hack".

Be glad I'm not in charge - if I was in charge connectivity to Russia, North Korea, China would consist of what we used to call sneakernet. Where someone would need to manually move it from outside US network to inside US network. That would probably cut 60+% of the existing hacking.

When I think how much the a holes doing this cost us in time and productivity every year I could care less what it costs their countries.

The internet is as secure as can possibly be. Remember, it was originally an idea to keep comms up after nuclear attacks & other large-scale disasters destroyed large chunks of network hardware.

Twitter, or anything else using simple username / password authentication, not so much.

Why the hell does Centcom have or need a twitter feed?

Second, twitter is twitter. It's not harder to hack theirs than yours.

Lastly, why the hell does Centcom have or need a twitter feed?
