television refresh rates question

its time to upgrade my TV to something bigger. i am trying to decide between two TV's now. one is 50 inch with a 240HZ refresh rate and the other is 48 inch with 60HZ refresh rate. both are around the same price and have the features i want. does refresh rate really matter that much? i like gaming, is a higher refresh rate better for gaming?

IMO, the refresh rate quality depends on the brand. For example, I have an older 42" LG 120Hz and a newer 40" Vizio 120Hz. However the picture is smoother on the LG and the PS4's video game play is waaaay better on the LG. Without seeing these 2 tv's you're referring to, generally speaking, the refresh rate does matter when comparing a 60Hz vs 240Hz. I know at Best Buy, they have the same videos playing across the sets. If you look closely, you'll see motion blur on the 60Hz and next to none on the 240Hz. Good luck.

The 60hz is a Sony bravia, and the 240 is a Vizio. I will have to go back to best buy and look at them again.

Over at the Best Buy in Dublin, they used to play this commercial on loop. It has a ticker like animation going left to right and you can see the blur when there's text being displayed. That'll give you an idea what I'm referring to. At the end, it depends on how much it bothers you.

The maximum DVB refresh rate is 60 Hz. The 120 and 240 Hz are interpolation features offered by the TV set. In high rate motion (e.g. football game) it *can* create slightly crispier pictures. For anything else it's useless. If the TVs are otherwise the same, take the 240 Hz model, you can always disable it.

Higher refresh rate is better. Careful with side by side comparisons in stores, it's not just about the refresh rate. One could look better due to "True Motion" which gives video the tele-novela feel to it (what I call it anyway). Then there's all the other picture settings... Look for the true motion (or similar name) feature. It's nice if you can adjust that. Once you decide and get your TV home look up the model and "picture calibration" for it.

For plasma all of the above is mute, you do not have all these funky refresh rare to think about. Refresh rates are an led work around.

There are still plasmas around just look on amazon. It will be awhile longer before they are totally unavailable.

i got the 240HZ, i went back to best buys and the vizio had a better picture. the Sony would stutter when the video they showed got fast. some guy is going to come over tomorrow and set it all up on a wall mount.
