Yesterday learned hard way that Speedtest.net is using a lot data!! A lot, I mean it. Recently I saw increase in speed in Verizon LTE to 80 Mbit/second and was testing many times, may be like 10 within a day and all of sudden got message that I run out of my data plan. That was sort of shock! After looking everywhere I can use a lot, I discovered that with speed of 80 M bit /sec used about 80 Mb of data! Stay away from speed test!!!

Speed tests are designed to saturate your connection to approximate your maximum sustained egress, ingress bandwidth limits are under the current conditions.

Speed test.net is not data hungry, you didn't understand the consequences of what you were doing.

Also, speed test.net didn't eat your data. They're more or less a testing referral service. The actual test throughput occurs with providers that volunteered to be listed on their service. Speed test just selects which provider you're sent to via latency measurements.

This is like complaining that testing how quickly your car can get to top speed, uses gasoline.

How do you expect a service to test how quick your internet is, without transferring data?

I am not complaining. I just telling that I didn't know it was using that much data, simple is that! And I am sharing with people who doesn't know it.

It's easy to estimate. If I do a download test at 80mbit/s and the test lasts about 10 seconds, that's 800 megabits. Convert megabits (/8) to megabytes and you get about 100mb. Do that 10 times and include the upload portions... yeah that eats but limited dataplans really quick.

4G LTE is significantly faster than what the market can use for the most part. You can burn through a 4GB monthly plan in about 6 minutes at constant 80mbit/s.

For the majority of mobile use, high speeds are pretty useless. My banking apps, calguns, web browsing, email, etc. would work perceptibly the same 5mbps vs 80mpbs. Netflix and the like benefit slightly, but as long as your download rates exceed the bitrate of the media you're playing, playback will be stutter free after the buffer fills.

Point being, there's not a lot of point to speed testing cellular networks.
