After some bad luck with ATT,I think Im going to try satellite internet.So far I see Hughs .How many providers are the for the SF east bay?

I use Hughes and it is TERRIBLE. Slow, worthless customer service, makes using my VPN for work damn near impossible, and did I mention SLLOOOWWWWW?

All of that was expected when I got it though...and where I live it is the only option other than dial-up.

My average download speed is 0.6 Mbps. Yea. That slow.

I had Comcast before Att,but after 6weeks I dont think I can get any kind of good deal from Comcast to go back.

I know latency used to be 1000 ms. The newer satellites are supposed to be faster.

My mother has only two options: dial-up and satellite. After trying satellite a few years back, she settled on dial-up, if that says anything to you.

Satellite internet should really be a last resort for people with no cable/DSL/fiber option.

Have you looked into wireless home internet (from towers, not satellite)? That type of service works much better than satellite. http://www.unwiredltd.com/consumer.php

Satellite internet SUCKS, especially Hughes! Don't do it!!!

Sattelite internet is unreliable, and has tyrannical data caps.

Satellite web is there for those who have absolutely no other solution.

Equipment and monthly costs are high, latency is crazy, speed is abysmally slow, and throttling occurs with relatively low usage compared to the monthly charge.

I'm in the boondocks of Idaho, and get great service from a local point-to-point wireless provider...the transmitting antenna is on a small town water tower about 8 miles away, antenna on my roof looks almost identical to my DirecTv dish.

See if you can find a p-t-p wireless provider and go forward.

Yeeup. Definitely go with something other than satellite if you have any option. It sucks, and it IS my only option.

Sprint cell data is almost as bad as AT&T's.

VZW, and T-mobile are better from what I have seen.

If you're going to use Sprint, consider using FreedomPop. They use the Sprint infra. They have better plans & costs. For instance, you get 500mb per month to start for free.

The free service is nice and good enough for occasional use. It is not rock solid so I wouldn't recommend as the primary internet. It's great as a backup and serves its purpose. Just a step or two above satellite. My experience is with their WiMAX & 3g. Have yet to try the newer LTE.
