What is wireless about Dropcam?

When my computer is 60 feet from where I want to mount the camera?

Am I supposed to place another computer close to it so I don't have to run 60 feet of USB cable?

Easiest wireless device ever to set up. I had mine up in minutes. This was the fourth product I bought for wifi cam that said easy setup. Never got the other three (big names) working. Total waste of time money effort.

AC Power....

It wasn't mentioned that you do need to plug your DropCam into an AC outlet that has a 6' USB cable going to it. So, it does have to have a plug nearby.

If you want a camera that mounts with one cable with no power nearby you are going to need a POE camera running off cat-5.

It's not hard to figure out that a camera will need power. The camera isn't running off of AC its DC you can run an extension cord from the outlet to the inverter that then pipes the DC power into the camera. Since DC power drops off with distance I would not attempt to extend the USB power cable.

I would just be worried that if they ever get sold, then all your data is in the hands and property of a new company that might do bad things with it...

This is a gun forum, not a forum for IEEE Engineers. I don't know what level of knowledge the OP has about DropCam's. Maybe he thought they were completely wireless (running off an internal battery) Maybe I was pointing out the obvious to someone as knowledgeable as you, but not everyone reading these posts are as smart as you....

I stick mine out back to watch the live stock sometimes it work about 100 feet though the WiFi router
The big draw back it the monthly subscription for recording .very easy to set up fos cams are a pain for me anyway.

It appears you need to connect through USB to set which network/security you would like to use.

Returned to Best Buy along with my complaint that even with the company's tech support on the phone I still couldn't get the stupid things connected. Easy set-up my butt. No matter what you say about all the faults of dropcam, at least you don't need a 4-year degree in Networking Solutions to use it.
