Should I encrypt my Droid Maxx?

I don't know that much about this process, other than it's supposed to make it almost impossible for the average joe to obtain your personal information off your device should it be stolen. I've been researching the pros and cons of doing this instead of just diving in. My observations thus far:

    Pros:

    1. Personal info very secure.
    2. I am the only person able to unlock the phone, and not even Google can do it.

    Cons:

    1. Performance may suffer slightly
    2. Crazy long PIN every time you want to unlock the phone

Other possible cons: (please correct me if I'm wrong)

    1. Can no longer share photos/data when hooking up to PC
    2. Whenever new OS comes out, must perform factory data reset to install

    Lingering questions:

    1. Should I use the encryption process that comes standard with the phone or use a third party app?
    2. Should I encrypt the entire phone to include the SD card?
    3. What happens when I install a new app or open up a document from email and save to the phone? Are those new apps/files automatically encrypted?
    4. Does it protect you against viruses/people stealing your info through a virus?

Oh and my phone is not rooted. totally stock.

    Is encryption worth it?

If you need to replace your phone you may not be able to get your data.

    1. Correct.
    2. Not correct.

    1. Use a third party app like mSecure or eWallet.
The upside is that the data you want secure can live on another platform for backup. This assumes you are talking passwords and such.

    2. Don't encrypt the SD card even if you encrypt the phone.
You will not be able to get data off that card with a different phone.

    3. Yes.

    4. Just use a third party app.

2.99€, or $3.77 US Dollars for up to 3 phones per account, one time fee per account, not monthly (it used to be 6 phones I believe, and I currently have 4 on mine).
      - Remote control through the website www.cerberusapp.com
      - Remote control via text messages
      - SIM Checker (for devices that have a SIM card): you will automatically receive alerts if someone uses your phone with an unauthorized SIM card

Remote control allows you to perform many operations on your device, like:
      - Locate and track it
      - Start a loud alarm, even if the device is set to silent mode
      - Wipe the internal memory and the SD card
      - Hide Cerberus from the app drawer
      - Lock the device with a code
      - Record audio from the microphone
      - Get a list of last calls sent and received
      - Get information about network and operator the device is connected to
      - And much more!
If the device is rooted you have WAY more, and better options.

Even unrooted you can still have it alarm REAL LOUD (think best siren available for the size of the speaker) with a message on the screen if your kid has the volume set to vibrate and they are either ignoring your texts, or don't notice the notifications of text messages.

I have never encrypted any of my Androids, but they all had pattern-locks enabled.

        I won't own a phone I can't root.
If you don't root it, you don't own it.

        That's a cool app.
I don't encrypt my phones. Any sensitive data lives in an encrypted file.

          - You can still share your data with PC! ( I do it all the time)
          - minimum 8 characters is a beech to enter everytime to unlock
          - very secure!
          - you should do it
-I AGREE 1MILLION PERCENT THAT YOU NEED A PHONE THAT IS ROOTABLE. No more stupid apps that anal probe you, better batt life, more secure, oh and did I mention no anal probing?
