Xbmc streaming has to be illegal. Right?

Craigslist and Facebook are now plagued with guys running xbmc on amazon fire boxes and claim unlimited movies and tv shows. And I mean stuff that hasn't even released yet. They say it is totally legal to stream as long as it isn't saved or distributed but I cannot see how it is illegal at all. There are actual businesses with shops in Fresno that are selling these things out in the open. What say you?

The XBMC software is completely legal. It's what you do with it that determines if you are doing something illegal or not.

The software is just for media playback.

It is being sold specifically to stream movies on unpaid services. That's what I was getting at as far as legality. I know in general the program is legal

The legal issue would have nothing to do with XBMC. It would be like claiming that BitTorrent is illegal because you can download pirated movies with it, yet plenty of people use it for perfectly legal reasons.

As far as selling boxes with XMBC running(a possible legal issue on its own) pre-configured to stream pirated movies, it wouldn't be a problem until you actually started streaming pirated movies. The people selling the boxes likely aren't the ones streaming the content.

Buying electronics from shady dealers with god knows what software pre-installed(there's no guarantee those things are just running a "normal" version of XBMC and only that) and connecting it to your network... that's a separate matter of insanity.

Besides, XBMC is out. Now it's called "Kodi". Get with the times

XBMC in the last 2yrs has taken steps to make it harder for pirates.

What these guys selling these hacked boxes are not telling you is about the constant battle to keep the secondary pirate add on active.

Lol. I figured all of what has been said in my head. Just wondered if others had different views.

Yes Movie/Music Piracy seems to only be illegal in the First World Countries.

The MPAA and other Media Groups do nothing to enforce in other countries.

I remember in Seol buying a Hacked PlayStation II right at a major dept store. They then sold me every PlayStation Game ever made at the time on Pirated DVD's for about $60 American.

I laughed as right next to all this was a display with Legal Versions selling for $50 a game.

It's basically torrents that stream as they're downloading rather than saving a torrent for later viewing. Same deal just watching as they're downloading. Tools can be used for good or evil... Computers, guns, forks, you name it.

Good to know. I will tell everyone I know to steer clear.

Sounds like you missed the point entirely. By your line of thinking everyone should also avoid DVD players because they can play pirated DVDs.

XBMC is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub that can be installed on Linux, OSX, Windows, iOS, and Android, featuring a 10-foot user interface for use with televisions and remote controls. It allows users to play and view most videos, music, podcasts, and other digital media files from local and network storage media and the internet. Our forums and Wiki are bursting with knowledge and help for the new user right up to the application developer. We also have helpful Facebook, Google+, Reddit, Twitter and Youtube pages. In the near future XBMC will be renamed to Kodi. You can read about it here.

You either must own all audio and video files through a legal way or you can use the add-ons that can be found in the XBMC.org official repository. I like how xbmc organizes my media library. It's a nice, streamlined program. Never ran as smooth as VLC for me though. Was a pain.

I missed nothing. I am referring to telling people not to buy these pre set up boxes that are loaded with the pirated add ons, which is the only reason that most people are buying them. Yes xbmc is a good media controll center but that's not what anyone who is buying these boxes are using them for. They are strictly using them for free illegal content since that's what they are being marketed for and they don't know any better.
