    gpu for plain video compression?

i get stuck with these little side projects for family. hey, can you upload this to youtube? turn it to an mp4 (which do first prior to youtube upload)? etc etc.

i use mainly sony playmemories since they use my camcorder. i'd join clips, then convert to mp4. i'm using a very old machine but i'm thinking of switching back to a desktop now. i'll use free tools like nch software now and then for my contourhd cam (if ever back on riding a race track or dirt bike)

so i'm debating of getting a tower with gpu or just use the built in intel video card. i don't game or do any CAD stuff. i might convert some raw format photo files to jpgs in batches but that's about it.

what'cha think? burn another $100-$150 or just stick with built in?

i don't want to build for now. this is just for simple use anyway but i don't want the cpu going 100% or so while i'm doing something else like calguns, watching or something.

no time for gaming or the like these days.

Intel CPU best for codecs. The cuda code is only for shaders and textures. I haven't seen anyone really fully utilize the cuda cores fully yet.

i read a little about software needing to capitalize the gpu for compression. almost like the whole debacle on do you need a quad core or dual? can the video edit s/w utilize quad or not?

i'm planning to use intel cpu. it's i5 or i7. can't recall which integrated video card it has.

Multiple cores and handbrake. Forget about the GPU.

Yup, if you want compression prowess just get the slowest i7. Between optimized instruction sets and multi-threading, it is extremely good at compression.

There are only a few high end visual editing studios that are now harnessing GPUs. As mentioned, Handbrake utilizes quad-cores and is free , very lightweight and simple to use.
