My ps3 has decided to take a dump and stop working. What happens is as soon as the power button is pressed to turn the console on the system beeps and then shuts off within the span of a second. I have a ton of data that I don't want to loose and I don't want a refurbished hunk of junk. Apparently a town of half a million can't offer up one person that knows how to fix my ps3. Any calgunners out there know of anyone who knows there way around fixing ps3s?

I use a shop south east of downtown la
I found them on craigs list. There are a ton of little independent shops who can either fix you ps3 or transfer the data to a new ps3 if needed.
The chipsets are sensitive to heat and when they overheat, they shy down as you described. Once they shut off, they stay in a self protection mode.
Normally they need to pull the heat sink off of the CPU, add new thermal paste and reset.Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

I had a heat sink problem with 2 different 360's in the span of a year after that I got rid of everything Microsoft.
This is the first Sony product to take a dump and I don't want to go through the hassle of working on troubleshooting another game system.Originally posted by aklonIn 1775 we stood up.

I'll keep an eye on those consoles. I'm getting to the point where I'm thinking about getting out of gaming if the consoles coming out crash as much as the last gen.Originally posted by aklonIn 1775 we stood up.

You can pull the hardrive get a reader, plug it into a working ps3 and copy the data oversigpicOriginally posted by gun toting monkeyboyYou did ask. They were only following your instructions. Next time be a bit more careful in how you phrase your posts. If you give people a straight line like that, this is about the level of response you are bound to get. Just be glad you didn't post "Date this rifle"... Those pictures are usually very disturbing.

No idea as to even start an attempt at that. I don't have a spare laying around either. I talked to every repair shop here in town ans they just say to send it in to Sony but you will lose all the data. I don't want to lose anything.
My hopes were for a shop here in town that could do that but all they work with are the non slim PS3 consoles.Originally posted by aklonIn 1775 we stood up.

Well I found a place down in Burbank called Dr Geeksters and they are familiar with the issue and can fix the Ps3 slims so hopefully they can fix it. I'll be in the LA area in a couple of weeks so I can drop it off and get it fixed.
Anyone have experience with that outfit.Originally posted by aklonIn 1775 we stood up.

The best that you can do is to rip the data from the drive to a new drive. Unfortunately, the Sony Playstation has some kind of copy-protection tech built into it. You will lose most of your application specific stuff. However, most of your data will be fine.
The PS3 uses the FAT32 formatted disk drive technology. You can read FAT32 using a USB adaptor ... Or you can get the service company to read it for you.
I have gone through many PS3 systems and have saved and restored data on all of them ... Usually, I just hire the services of the local tech shop to rip the data for me.Comment

Does that mean all my save data, in game achievements, unlocks, and trophies, add ons, and expansion packs will be saved. I know I can re-download the expansion packs but all the data such as game saves and what not would be lost if it can't be retrieved from the hard driveThe best that you can do is to rip the data from the drive to a new drive. ^ all but saved game data, mentioned above is saved to the PSN servers and registered to your account
You can pour gas on ps3, light it on fire... Buy a new one, login to your psn account and all will be as if it was your original, minus saved game data...
In that case, you'll need to pull the hard drive from the original (if your not interested in troubleshooting or paying to get the current console running again), if you know the "name" of your ps3 system... You can rename the new console the same as the current one and the afore mentioned "copy protection tech" will accept the old drive rather than format it. You'll have to rename the device before swapping the hard drives of course.
In the future, just back up saved game data periodically on a usb flash drive or external hard drive, it isnt effected by Sony's copy protection bs, and can be freely down/uploaded to and from any ps3 easily.Comment

Yup, YLOD...
Happened to me with our Gen1 PS3. I was able to get it to turn on after trying about 30 times after unplugging it for a while. once I got it to turn on, I immediately put a fan on it and hooked up my external HDD, then started the backup utility.
When I tried to fix it, it didn't work so I got a new PS3 and used my external HDD with the restore feature and got most of my stuff back. My son lost a couple game's data.Peace is that brief moment in history when everybody stands around reloading. - unknown
