Considering Mining Dogecoin or Litecoin, then exchanging for Bitcoin...

I have 3 rigs at home that do nothing but serve files most of the time (well one keeps a copy of my motion-detect files from my cameras, but not much else).

I would like to put them to a more productive use the majority of the time, such as mining.

I don't think mining is going away, and if someone tries, digital currency will probably go black-market(, or be legally transferred to some type of labor/service performed?). The IRS currently sees it as "property"?

Anyway: USB ASIC procs, or Video cards?

I don't play games on computers (360, and I don't do that much either), so I assume that I would want to go USB ASIC procs.

Power isn't a real concern, as I have solar panels that generate more than we use currently, and we run the air all we want and never see a rise these days...

Am I wrong to consider USB ASIC processors?

Do you really need USB 3.0 throughput for mining (I currently only have USB 2.0, until I upgrade to an i7 this year)?

USB ASICs, don't bother with your 3 file servers. My opinion. If you want to exchange for Bitcoin mine at a pool like Wafflepool. You will need lots of MHash to make it worthwhile, start out at maybe 10MHs and up. The rise in difficulty will make your miners obsolete pretty quick, so you will be buying/selling/buying a lot if you really want to make money.

Another way to do it is to mine coin(s) that have just started out and that you believe have a future. Mine a ton of coins fast and hope someday they are worth something. I mined Bitcoin back when it was below a dollar just because I liked the concept of crypto currency, didn't really think it was going to go anywhere

Check out GAW Miners for equipment..
