    iPhone is dying

I have a iPhone 4s that's about to give up the ghost. I'm with verizon and have a grandfathered unlimited data plan. At my current job I have a ton if down time and I fill that void with staring at this little tiny screen. Watching netflix, YouTube, playing games....
Here's my question and I'm just looking for opinions as to if it's a good idea or not.
I'm thinking about getting a generic flip phone and an iPad mini instead of a iPhone 5.
Do you think that would be something worth doing?
The cost for the devices would be about the same either way. Only down side I see is carrying the 2 devices. I haven't handled the iphone5, is it a noticeably bigger screen?

If my job didn't require it, I would go with the old Samsung Rugby flip phone and get a tablet (not apple) for mobile stuff. If you go for a new phone, the Samsung Galaxy is a great alternative to apple products.

I don't deny that Samsung is better, I just don't want to deal with switching all my stuff from iOS to Android. We have 2 iPads, 2 iPhones an Apple MacBook Air, iMac24, Apple TV, apple air port extreme. I'm sure none of this stuff is android compatible. So, if I could, I would get that giant new Samsung phone.

Kinda painted myself into a corner. Sure wish Apple would step up their game a bit. A buddy told me that the reason Apple hasn't gone to a Samsung sized screen is because Apples target customer is women. They feel women like the look and simplicity of the IPhone and being that women typically have smaller hands, they need the phone to be functional using only 1 hand. In other words, their thumb needs to be able to reach across the screen. Makes perfect sense as long as you're only interested in selling to half the population.

after being a proud iPhone 4s and iPhone 5 owner, i switched over to the S5 and have no regrets. I am pretty much all apple minus my phone now and the transition wasn't as harsh as i expected. I can even still get my iCloud email on the galaxy

iphones suck compared to modern phones but if you are an apple fan, i would wait for the 6 before buying the 5s. its on its way out very soon and the 6 is rumored to have a bigger screen.

                iPhone is dying

I had the first generation Motorola Android probably 6 years ago. I was so disappointed in how fast it was obsolete. Within 6 months it couldn't handle even it's own latest and greatest operating system updates. All the social media stuff also choked it to death. I went with Apple because is seen first hand that they seem to run at the same speed from birth to death. I have no complaints with this phone, I've had it since the 4s first came out. My smart phone use is strictly recreational. We ended up with the iMac and MacBook because we were absolutely DONE with Windows. Then our Apple inventory grew from there. For the most part we've been real happy, but again we are recreational users.
This has been dropped a few too many times, the last time it fell it has been having some issues. Not sure if it's related or a software issue.

When Androids outsell iPhones at the ratio of 7:2.21, (2014: http://techcrunch.com/2014/02/23/kan...sales-android/ ) there is a reason...

Many people on iPhones realize the efficiency of Android over iOS(uX) with a "back" button always in the same place, and a keyboard that can go landscape in all apps (even if you have to switch the launcher or ROM) once they have it for a week. Everybody I know (aside from 3 coworkers that don't care about efficiency, except for pictures, and they take a LONG time to type elaborate messages without a slide-out-keyboard or a landscape one for most apps) that went from Android to an iPhone, then back to Android soon after (even if at an added cost of the new Android retail-price out-of-pocket in many cases). You don't have to use your real name on your gmail account tied into your Android (unlike Apple with iTunes, iMessage, AppleCare, iWhatever else with a required tied-in credit card number from what I understand).

It is like people that went with Zune... they sucked it up, and went with something better, no matter if they took a loss by changing technology (and apps associated in this case), in upgrading efficiency.

I thought women were the only ones that had a place to carry those tablet sized phones ? That Samsung is huge !
most men don't carry a purse or backpack around as part of a normal daily routine,so I thought pocket sized is as big as most would want, that tablet phone dosent look like it would be comfortable in a front pocket to me.

Maybe when screens will fold in half,I'd consider a larger screen.
Until then, I will just continue to use a tablet or laptop when I need to do some serious internet surfing.

I had a 4S that started having a switch problem.. and after about a month of dealing with that, I utilized my 2 year warranty protection and traded in for an identical 4S... so I'm good for another couple years.. Why not replace it with the same phone? They are still selling them and they are cheaper now than they were then..

sounds like youre deeply rooted in itunes and icloud so i would continue using the mac product if youre not able to move on due to buying movies, music, etc through itunes. there is just no point to being locked down to one service as apple does to their customers.

i use amazon and can switch back and forth to my apple or android devices at will...not so easy to do with itunes.

my advice would be to wait for the 6 if you dont want to drop apple and rebuild your inventory in a more open market.

are you talking about a 6 in screen samsung? if so, most mens pockets can easily hold one. now hipster d-bags with skinny jeans might have problems but they are typical iphone users.

Yea I'd wait for the 6 before making a move.. The Galaxy does seem very appealing though!!

Can you make it a month or so? The iPhone 6 is almost out. Perfect time to upgrade. Plenty of people have an old smart Phone sitting around unused. Maybe you could borrow one for a month or two until the iPhone comes out.

Or just get a no contract pay as you go phone to tide you over for the next month or so.

                            That's what I would do.

My wife backed up my phone into iTunes, the did a complete reset. Wiped it clean and reloaded it up again.
Looks like all is good. With the exception of a cracked screen, I should be able to hold on for a while.
