    Anybody rocking Dropcam?

I had been seeing these all over the dotcoms in SF, saw one at BestBuy for $150, picked it up, pretty cool. Easy set-up, works great with my devices. Software interface is decently designed.

The first thing I did was find out which one of my canines was doing the nocturnal damage sessions in the kitchen, BUSTED!

Been thinking of buying more. Anybody have any dropcam stories or ideas or thoughts?

Can they drop images/video to a local box, or does your video have to be hosted where the provider of the cloud service can see you in your undies, and full-monty?

I don't trust my data on someone else's drives, so I might not trust my log-and-berries videos/IMGS for their admins to parse, and possibly sell the rights to the storage media if they get bought out...

Looking at their website they seem to have part of their business model the upgrade $$ for weeks or months of video to review. Looks like a slick piece of hardware, but I avoid buying hardware that requires a subscription to utilize the hardware fully.

Surprised nobody mentioned dropcamming a safe. Let's say $150-$200 for dropcam hardware per cam plus $100/yr for cloud.

I use a couple of foscams in my house for canine antic prevention. 1/2 the price of a dropcam and meet my needs.

I have a few myself, and you can/could push recorded images to an FTP server off-site for security, however this would be via plain text passwords that anyone could capture if you don't encrypt the connection 1st...

Do the newer HD Foscams drop to SFTP, or drop video streams rather than picture-per-second these days (or are you using something like Zoneminder)?

I'm with them on the foscam. I've been looking high and low for decent home monitoring and I had high hopes for dropcam but F that pricing. My god, just think how pricy that could get. Stupid pricing and just ok service. There needs to be a better roll your own solution.

I've had Drops Cams for ~1.5 yrs. Worked well, one was dedicated to my safe.
Recently they pushed a software update to "improve" motion detection.
A dismal failure would describe the update. The Cams no longer detect motion other than their prescribed motion areas. Difficult to describe but it makes real time motion impossible. They say their going to "fix it" sometime this month. I have let my subscription with them lapse and will not renew until it's fixed, if ever. They are not responsive to CS.
Meanwhile motion real time (no Cloud DVR) detection still does NOT work properly because of the lousy software they pushed a couple months ago.

I liked these cams until their software update broke them.

                      Buyer beware.

                      YMMV

FYI, woot is having a big sale on a bunch of Foscam cameras. They have indoor and outdoor, both with night vision and tilt and scan features. Also they have a cool alarm clock spy cam as well. Everything is 20% to 55% off list.

Set up Foscam Security Cameras. Watch raccoon near trash cans. Set it to dramatic music. Screen it at festivals.

For those of you with the Foscam units, did you go with this management app that's for sale...

Or are they able to be used with free and open source camera software?

                          Thanks!

I use Dropcam Pro for my business. I pay the $99 per year for cloud recording which goes back 7 days. You can pay more for 30 days of recording but my needs are met with 7 day cloud recording.
As for the Dropcam? It's great, No permanent install, the camera can be moved & it has a remote zoom feature as well as a 2 way microphone (Not the best)
I am planning to buy one for my home soon.

Got some more dropcam hours under my belt.

The incoming on the mike is pretty amazing, like, spy level acoustics. I ran it through an amp from my phone and just wow on the mike.

Dropcam sure wants to be as close to the router as possible. That's a bummer.

I am using the $10/mo cloud option, works great, impressive, but unable to access cloud recorded vid from Android only tablets and PC's. Live vid on Android works great wifi/3g/4g.

Heck the mike is so good I would buy some dropmikes if the price point was around $30 or so.
