    extending wi fi

Hey guys...I live about 3 blocks from my office where I have internet service through the local Telco. I was wondering if it would be possible to pick up that signal at my house. I was thinking something like this: Ubiquiti AG-2G16-HP AirGrid M2-HP 16dBi Grid 2.4GHz 24vdc POE.
...any suggestions on making this happen?
    Thanks

Yes it is possible if you have a clear line of sight to the antenna from your house. I did some testing with a similar antenna and got signal about 1/2 mile away.

Itguy....I was thinking the other way around. I want to put the antennae on my home and use it to pick up the Wi-Fi from my office router. Is there a way of doing this?

Yes it would work. But you will need antennae on both ends with clear like of sight. Your work will be set for normal AP mode and the your home will be set to wireless repeater or bridge mode. Depending on how you want to connect stuff up.

I set this sort of thing up for my employer who was <.5 mile away. We put up an antennae on the roof of the two-story office facing his house, and he put the other antennae inside his house's 2-story attic. Obviously having the antennae mounted on the roof would have provided better signal, but this was good enough. This was back in the 2mbit/s Internet days, and he got 10mbit back to the office, so he was more than happy.

Back when we had DSL at work and had service issues almost weekly, I got fed-up and picked up two Uniquity Nanostations and made a 9 mile point to point wireless bridge. Connected to the WAN2 on my firewall, I used my friends house as a fail over connection; so what you are trying to do is completely possible.

Since then I've bought, used, and installed a lot of Ubiquity products... I would be surprised if there wasn't something in their catalog which would accomplish what you are trying to do, but I don't think the Grid is the right product.

3 blocks isn't very far, I would look more at the standard non airMAX Nanostation in 2.4 or 5ghz or NanoBeam M. Depending on the terrain, radio, and antenna design, you may or may not need LOS. Chances are you will need to setup one AP at the work location in bridge mode depending if they have outdoor radios and if they are capable of even getting to you. Putting a fat dish on one side, you might see an SSID, but you might not be able to negotiate that connection.

If you need to mask your home network from the office network you can also setup the AP in router mode which would do NAT between the two locations or just feel the work LAN connection as the WAN connection to your local network.
