where did the mbr info go?

helped someone with a laptop. took a image using acronis to make restoration faster. this was before any apps were installed or updates done. only acronis was first installed. something happened i guess 3 or 4 days later, a reinstall was required. office 2013 got corrupt and it won't uninstall or repair or re-install. figured just reimage since it's faster to do w/o much time invested in it yet using it.

i ended up doing factory restore. the acronis reinstall from image wasn't working. had to switch bios from intel smart technology to achi for laptop to recognize acronis boot disk or flash drive (linux kernel coudn't be found otherwise). but after reinstall, mbr/os couldn't be found. thought it was a corrupt acronis boot cd but did it over flash drive with same result.

so off to using recovery disks burned (and over flash drive too). had some problems since i got rid of the 8gb hibernation partition doing it thru acronis before since i figured the recovery disks will restore it anyway. nope, was wrong. recovery disks did not restore the hibernation partition (intel rapid start technology) because it was actually a ssd card, not in the regular hard drive instead. so it had 2 drives - regular and a ssd. had to do lots of resource and that's where i realized/found that the hibernation partition was a ssd, and had to re-create it. it kept on giving the "you're not using intel rapid start technology" pop-up error.

anyway, i looked thru acronis to compare. the initial data show mbr info in the acronis but later after reimage, it doesn't. it still boots but it seems to insinuate (original image) i can boot it via ssd? any reason why the mbr info does not show now?

i also noticed that the out of the box setup had a fat16 partition vs. after using recovery disks, it's a fat32. kinda odd the setup is different out of the factory floor vs. recovery yourself.

I gave up on Acronis long ago, too many instances like this and they are in UK so tech support is lacking!

thanks darryl. the weird part is that the acronis screen before reimaging using cd's, the mbr info is there. after.. it's gone! i know the mbr is there since it's booting up else it won't if it was missing. i'm new to double disks machines especially if the 2nd one is only for hibernation (as opposed to just doing it on the regular hdd).

my acronis is 2008. i was going to upgrade to commercial version since home version can't restore an encrypted disk. but since this is out of my own pocket and work wasn't going to do squat to reimburse or partially reimburse so i get back to productivity fast, then meh, i said screw it. so still using old one but seems not quite compatible with new bios setups.

If you have UEFI BIOS you are never going to get that old Acronis to work as it predates UEFI!

BTW... it appears that you have only one physical HDD, the 2nd drive must be a USB as its only 8GB!

there's actually 2 hd - one is a 32gb ssd. the other is a 750gb hdd. it's weird that the 32gb ssd wasn't mentioned in the specs. i only found out about it after reading and researching more on the hibernation partition. i saw the specs when i was trying to restore the hibernation partition but acronis coudln't do it. it was in the acronis screen i saw 32gb and the model. sigh..

so i guess i need a new 2014 acronis? i wonder if it'll restore the image i took using 2008 acronis. guess i gotta ask in the acronis forum unless someone here knows.
