How much internets do i need?

I posted this in Off Topic, but it hasn't been answered yet. Hopefully you guys can help me out.


I called comcast on monday and tried to get my cable cut off and just get internet. They're trying to charge me $79.99 for 50mbs, meanwhile their website has the same deal plus the local channels for $49.99 a month "for new customers only." I've played this game before, so I called back.... For a total of FIVE times and every one of them pretty much told me to F off.

So, now I'm looking for a new internet provider. AT&T is the only other option in my area as far as big companies go, but they have a data limit and that's just not cool. There's a few local companies, but the "fastest" one for residential use is 10mbs for $69.99. The Netfix website says you only need 5mbs for HD movies, but for some reason 10mbs scares me.

While I understand that Comcast may be pissing you off right now, and you may feel like they're being douchenozzles, look at the numbers. $79.99 for a guaranteed 50*, or tenbux less than that for a guaranteed 10 from AT&T. That's 87% of the price for 20% of the bandwidth.

I hate Comcast, tbpfh. Last time I had a problem with their service, I told the lady on the phone that the only reason I was still using their internet service (I had the $79.99 one) was that it was less terrible than anyone else locally. She then offered me the cheap package with basic cable to placate me.




*which is probably a lot higher in reality (mine goes anywhere from 55-75 usually).

It's funny how when you want to upgrade your cable they have the power to give you the "new customer" deals, but when you want to downgrade they pretty much tell you to F off. Thank God for mini monopolies. I was afraid I'd have to stay with them.

I have 3Mbps from Cox, it's about $45/month including taxes, fees (taxes), and surcharges (taxes.)

That's fast enough to support streaming via Netflix/Hulu _and_ surfing calguns at the same time

Comcast generally pisses people off. This woman smashed up a comcast office with a hammer:

If I were you, I would just call comcast and threaten to switch service providers, see if they lower prices. It worked for direct tv.

I threatened all 5 people I talked to with leaving and I got the "oh, I'm sorry to hear that..." Maybe smashing up the office will work though

I have TV (and ALL the movie packages), interwebz, and landline all tied into my package. It's a little over $200 a month, but my office pays $100 a month of it as business expense.

In my experience, the high numbers that Comcast cites are usually a burst speed, they throw you the first 2-3 Mb at that speed, then they drop it down to a much lower speed.

10 Mb/s is usually the minimum for getting good HD streaming. 20 would probably be minimum margin of safety.

Also knowing what your latency is to the nearest hub is pretty critical. I would be willing to take half the speed to get half the latency, as long as we are above the minimum speed. Any time an error checked stream gets a lost packet, you have to fight the latency to send a request back to the server to get the packet over again. If you have poor signal strength and latency, that makes stuff very frustrating no matter how "fast" your advertized speed is.

Your experience does not square with mine. I get the same transfer rates for a 300k file that I get with a 30 GB file. And I usually get about a 20 ping, according to speedtest.

If it makes you guys feel better I pay $111 for Hugh's net satellite internet. And I'm restricted to downloading 20GB a month. But that's the price you pay for rural living I guess
