Tried to transfer data from PC to Mac, need some help!

Tried to transfer HD data to Mac from 10 year old laptop, 32 bit window OS XP (?). Down loaded transfer software from apple site that was designed for a 64 bit PC. Now Windows will not load. Did get it to change to another screen which asked for a password, a ten year old password.

    Thanks

Saw this had no replies - my best suggestion is to call your local Apple store and find out if they can help you at the genius bar...

Why did you need to install software?

Set up an SMB share on the OS X box, mount the share from Windows. Copy.

      or

Thanks Guys & Gals, the Dell laptop is running MicroSoft XP, the Apple store does not go that far back (so I was told). Also the Dell was running very slow, when it was working.

A shame really because it has a very nice large screen and nice keyboard.

^^ Correct, share any drives with data on the laptop and mount them from OS X, then copy/paste to your new system. The user account on your laptop will need a password to work. Or just get a 32gb flash drive for like $20 shipped and copy/paste to new system.

Once you get all of your data off your old laptop, wait a week or two to make sure you didn't miss anything you need, then format the laptop and reinstall Win XP and give it away to someone who needs a computer for homework or light web browsing.

pull the drive and attach it to the mac with a ide-to-usb cable, or use a 2.5" usb enclosure.

you can pm me and I can tell you what I did in detial. I have done it two different ways. the first time I just transferred the data via external drive then did application level transfer like IE bookmarks to safari and MS outlook for windows to Apple mail/contacts calendar etc... The second time I did it for another computer I used apples transfer utility and it worked great. there were some issues. but once I got it to work it was great.

I just had to keep doing it over and over until the two machines finally recognized each other and then viola it worked. It took about 50 attempts until the windows machine finally connected correctly. I also did a mac to mac using same utility and it was flawless. So I think the PC utility was a little finiscky.
